Florals for Spring Ruled the Met Gala 2024 Red Carpet

0

When Anna Wintour gives her unofficial approval to wear florals for spring, A-list celebrity stylists listen. On the Met Gala red carpet 2024, stars like Ashley Graham and Emma Chamberlain wore floral couture in keeping with the evening’s dress code, “Garden of Time.”

This year’s soirée, co-chaired by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, celebrates The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” honouring exceptionally rare and delicate garments — the “sleeping beauties” of the Costume Institute’s collection, as it were. According to Vogue, approximately 250 pieces spanning over a 400-year history — including at least 15 archival items deemed too fragile ever to be worn again — will be displayed during the exhibit’s run from May 10 to September 2, 2024.

Inspired by the concept of time, the 2024 Met Gala dress code “Garden of Time” was open to much interpretation, but unsurprisingly, floral fashion moments and botanical beauty looks bloomed all over the red carpet.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Mary Phillips Is Unstoppable

0

They say you can tell a lot about a person by how they take their coffee. Myself? Hot, cold, room temperature, a day old — it doesn’t matter, I’ll drink it all. What does that say about me? (Don’t answer that.) Makeup artist Mary Phillips, on the other hand, likes her coffee to be “either really, really hot or really, really cold.” I overhear Phillips place her (very respectable) order as I walk into the room to interview her, and she insists she’s never understood how people can make a cup of coffee and leave it out before returning to a lukewarm cup an hour later. (Guilty…and ashamed.)

So, what does it say about Phillips that she takes her hot coffee scalding and her iced coffee freezing? If you’re down to read into it as much as I am, then you’ll agree it means she’s committed, sure of what she wants and does things the way they are supposed to be done. And as I learned during my chat with the celebrity makeup artist, this is all totally accurate.

With over 2.5 million followers on TikTok and Instagram combined, and an A-list client roster (think Hailey Bieber, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and Dua Lipa), Phillips is one of the most booked-and-busy makeup artists in Hollywood. Her underpainting technique (a method of doing concealer and contour underneath foundation, rather than on top) exploded to such an extreme level on TikTok last year that calling it viral feels like a wild understatement. And given her extensive list of celeb clients, her work graces pretty much every red carpet there is.

A post shared by Mary Phillips (@maryphillips)

How did this all happen? Like I said, commitment, self-confidence and precision. Which brings us to the makeup. Over the last 18 years, Phillips has become known for her masterful makeup application on some of Hollywood’s biggest names. In fact, she’s the artist behind some of their signature looks — think: J.Lo’s glow and Kendall’s sultry eyes. She was recently in Toronto for a L’Oréal Paris masterclass (Phillips is a brand ambassador and did the makeup for Kendall Jenner’s first L’Oréal Paris campaign last year), but her love for makeup started long before she completely and utterly mastered the art form.

“I knew from a very young age that I wanted to do makeup,” says Phillips. “Like, a very young age. My friends would come over and I’d do their makeup, and I’m sure some of them weren’t allowed to come back,” laughs Phillips. “My parents would be like, ‘What? They’re just playing dress-up.’ But the other parents were like, ‘Our daughter can’t wear red lipstick. She is literally six’.” It wasn’t until she was a little bit older and started doing her friends’ makeup for proms and school dances that she became hooked. “That feeling of helping someone feel good about themselves? That was always very addictive to me,” says Phillips. “I knew I had to do it forever.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mary Phillips (@maryphillips)

But when she told her parents she would be pursuing makeup artistry as a career, “it was crickets,” says Phillips. “They were like, ‘Wait, what? So you don’t want to go to college?’” However, Phillips’ parents — who, you’ll recall, were supportive of their once-six-year-old daughter mastering the art of a red lip (slay) — eventually came around to the idea. “They asked, ‘OK, what do you want to do?’ and I said ‘Celebrity makeup.’ And they were like, ‘Alright. How are you going to do that?’ and I responded, ‘I have no idea but there is no other option’.”

Because Phillips grew up just outside of L.A., she was able to continue living at home with her parents as she went to cosmetology school and started taking on jobs assisting other makeup artists. Today, she’s one of the go-to makeup artists in Hollywood, and — no gatekeeping here— she is eager to see what the next generation will bring to the industry. “I have learned the craziest eyeliner techniques from 18-year-olds on TikTok,” she says when I ask why she’s embraced social media with open arms, especially when it would have been just as easy to close herself off to a public platform that can be quite demanding and time-consuming in nature.

@makeupbymaryphillips thanks to everyone who came out to my @L’Oréal Paris toronto master class hosted by my girl @jaclynforbes❣️#lorealparis #masterclass #maryphillipsmakeup ♬ Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!(Edit) – Scotty & Wilcox

“In the beginning of my career, I would pull up to newsstands and buy every magazine that was doing cool beauty spreads, and I’d spend days on the floor of my apartment making tear sheet books, or going to the drugstore with those tear sheets and trying to colour-match L’Oréal Paris lipsticks.” (For inquiring minds, Phillips’ present-day fave is L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Resistance Liquid Lipstick in “Le Rouge Paris.”) And while that was all so much fun, now all of that information is on TikTok and Instagram. These platforms are full of so much education.”

“And honestly, I think most makeup artists today are getting their inspiration from social media,” says Phillips with a smile. “Some just lie about it.”

A Full History of Rihanna’s Met Gala Looks

0

In recent years, we’ve come to expect a few things from the Met Gala: a blurry bathroom mirror selfie, a controversial Kim Kardashian moment and a late but totally worth-it Rihanna entrance.

After all, what is fashion’s biggest night sans Rih in attendance? It’s a tauntingly existential question that one should never have to face. The star has become a treasured fixture of the Met steps, reliably serving an abundance of outré ensembles indicative of her distinct eras.

Photography by Getty Images

Though she has skipped the event a few times since first attending in 2007, Rihanna is reportedly set to appear at the 2024 Met Gala — with her sharing plans for a “simple” (?) outfit this year. Nothing is confirmed, though, and in true Rihanna fashion, we’ll likely wait until the eleventh hour to see if she shows up.

In the meantime, as the first Monday or May approaches, it’s only right to engage in a necessary pre-red carpet ritual: looking at every Rihanna Met Gala appearance. Find them all below.

2007: “Poiret: King of Fashion”

Photography by Getty Images

There is so much to say. The severe side part. The fishnet gloves. The rhinestone embellishments that could have come straight from a 2000s prom catalogue. (Respectfully.) Here, a 19-year-old Rihanna is pictured in a gauzy Georges Chakra gown which she accessorized with a single red rose. This was the star’s first Met, and for that, we must honour it.

2009: “The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion”

Photography by Getty Images

Kris Jenner is shaking! Donning a Dolce & Gabbana suit and teased pixie cut, Rihanna pulled up to this year’s Met in a playful menswear moment evocative of the Kar-Jenner matriarch.

With exaggerated proportions and deliciously of-its-time chunky stilettos, the look made for a memorable sophomore Met appearance. Honourable mention for the beauty — comprising blue eyeliner and subtle grey streaks — which brings a punk mood to the forefront.

2011: “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”

Photography by Getty Images

Life was simpler during Rihanna’s red hair era. The singer’s famous fiery locks are synonymous with her Loud album in 2010, which is widely considered to be a culture-shaping body of work.

For her third time stepping onto the Met red carpet, she fashioned her tresses in a long side braid and an edgy black lace Stella McCartney gown.

2012: “Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations”

Photography by Getty Images

Now a familiar face at fashion’s biggest night, Rihanna proved that black doesn’t have to be boring with this form-fitting ‘fit. For the 2012 Met Gala, she went moody in a charcoal crocodile-textured Tom Ford dress and long dark talons to match. Her asymmetrical messy buns and half-shaved head marked another era in her musical evolution.

2014: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion”

Photography by Getty Images

At the 2014 Met Gala, Rihanna upped the Anti (get it?) on her red carpet style with a silk two-piece set by Stella McCartney. Wearing a structured crop top and body-hugging skirt, the star finished the look with bedazzled stacked rings and perfectly-placed flyaways framing her face.

She recently told British Vogue this was one of her favourite Met looks, and it’s not hard to see why.

2015: “China Through The Looking Glass”

Photography by Getty Images

Omelettes will never be the same. This may be Rihanna’s most meme’d Met Gala look yet, and it is also arguably her most iconic. Dreamed up by designer Guo Pei, the gown’s opulent yellow hue and imposing train immediately went viral. It also functioned as prime meme fodder for pan-fried egg comparisons.

As one of the only guests to follow the theme by wearing a Chinese designer, Rihanna hit this look out of the park. Plus, in its unbridled buzziness, the get-up cemented her as the Met Gala guest to watch.

2017: “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art Of The In-Between”

Photography by Getty Images

What do you wear when the dress code demands “avant-garde” costuming? A floral confection that fuses confetti visuals with stitched-together appliqués. Here, Rihanna honed in on the Comme des Garçons theme as one of the few celebs to actually wear the honoured label to the Met. Not to mention her ethereal glam, which warrants its own dissertation.

2018: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”

Photography by Getty Images

Much has been made of the Pope’s presence in the fashion zeitgeist. (Look no further than 2023’s puffer jacket kerfuffle.) At this Met Gala, Rihanna brought the discourse to new heights by dressing as the Catholic figurehead in Maison Margiela.

From the cross-shaped motifs to her pearl-embellished mitre, the regal get-up raised the bar on contentious cosplay. But when it comes to serving looks, she blessed us all that evening.

2021: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”

Photography by Getty Images

Who wouldn’t want to wear a bed duvet out into the world? In 2021, Rihanna shut down the Met Gala red carpet in one of the evening’s most talked-about looks. Donning a big hooded gown by Balenciaga, she graced the steps alongside partner A$AP Rocky, who also channeled couch-ready chicness in a wholesome quilted cloak. Comfort for all!

2023: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”

Photography by Getty Images

Here, Rihanna was again the last to arrive — and for good reason. Wearing a frothy Valentino gown covered in sculpted flowers, she channelled a Chanel bride with a contemporary twist.

Then pregnant with her second child, the beauty mogul removed her rosette-covered coat to reveal her baby bump. As she posed with A$AP Rocky, she let her ivory train trail down the Met steps. Side by side, the couple made for the perfect final image to a night that celebrates the connection of clothing. 10/10!

Plumping Beauty Products That Deliver Instant Results

0

Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to beauty. With the exception of swiping on some makeup, beauty routines can often be a waiting game. For instance, it can take anywhere from one to six months to start seeing the results of many go-to skincare ingredients, such as vitamin C and retinol. Lash and brow serums require about two months of consistent use for hair growth to be noticeable. Hoping for your natural nails to get long enough to be shaped into the talons of your dreams? It’s doable, but don’t hold your breath.

That’s why when a fresh batch of skincare products promises instant plumping results, we take note. If full, supple-looking skin is what you’re after, while you wait for the rest of your routine to catch up, you can opt for procedures that provide instant (or near-instant) results, like Sofwave, the beauty editor fave treatment that uses ultrasound energy to heat the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and resulting in tight, plump skin.

For equally quick results, you can also turn to products boasting a megadose of hyaluronic acid to make your skin appear more taut in a snap, or reach for lipglosses formulated with ginger, cinnamon, chili or cayenne pepper (yes, really!) to give your lips a juicy, swollen appearance. This season’s beauty faves will get your skin “plumpin’ plumpin’” — stat.

Below, plumping beauty products that give you results in the blink of an eye.

Tiffany & Co. unveils Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams

Is there anything Pharrell Williams can’t do? The singer-songwriter and creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear has just designed a Tiffany & Co. collection, and it’s quite sensational.

Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams offers a healthy dose of punk spirit across necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings thanks to several sharp, spear-like spikes in both titanium and 18k yellow gold.

“The use of black titanium… it’s a physical manifestation of beauty in Blackness,” Williams says in a press release. And there’s no doubt the details in the pieces are ultra-intentional. “I’m very inspired by the water,” he adds. “The name of this collection ‘Titan’ draws inspiration from Poseidon, ruler of the sea, King of Atlantis.” And if you didn’t know, Atlantis is the name of the Virginia Beach community Williams grew up in.

5 Bridal Nail Designs to Wear on Your Wedding Day

0

There’s a long list of to-dos to check off in preparation for a wedding — not least of which is deciding which nail design will be the one come the big day. And we’ve got a hot take for the soon-to-be brides out there: Wedding nails don’t have to be basic.

From bridal bow accents and heart-shaped tips to chrome polishes and 3-D pearl adornments, there are endless ways to elevate a nuptial nude mani without outshining your ring — or your dress. Here, we break down five of our favourite wedding nail designs for 2024, and how to recreate them.

Bridal bows

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Melanie Graves (@overglowedit)

From Honor to Tanner Fletcher, New York’s Bridal Fashion Week collections for the Spring 2025 season were rife with bow-bedecked designs. Our advice to 2024 brides? Get ahead of the trend, and flaunt a set of ribbon-adorned nails on your big day.

Forever feminine and eternally chic, bow designs add a subtle touch of elegance to a neutral base. As seen on the stunning manicure above, you can limit your ribbon placement to just a couple of nails (most importantly, on your ring finger), or you can go all-out with a full set. For a cohesive look, match the colour of the bows to your dress, or your wedding day bling. It’s all in the details.

Though you could have a manicurist hand-paint this design, nail stickers can help cut the cost. Deco Beauty’s Coquette nail stickers are easy to apply and come with tons of bow-shaped options to choose from. (These are also fun to play with DIY-style for pre-wedding festivities, like your bachelorette weekend.)

Heart accents

A post shared by IMARNI (@imarninails)

What better way to declare your love than with heart-shaped fingertips? Not quite as cliché as painting hearts all over your nails yet still as romantic, this sweetheart set is for the bride who just can’t part from her tried-and-true pink polishes.

With the shape of a standard French manicure as your base, these easy wedding nails only require you to add two more arches overtop to form a heart. Lighter, milky pink polishes will give you a more subdued look, while brighter, bubblegum hues are guaranteed to pop against a white wedding dress.

With a name like “Sweet Heart,” this OPI Nail Lacquer was practically made for this look. And it’s subtle enough to go with all of your honeymoon outfits after the wedding, too.

Textured French tips

A post shared by Phoebe 🩷 (@phoebesummernails)

Strike a balance between a classic French manicure and something more modern with this textured-tip design. By trading in a solid white shade for a pearlescent polish at the tips, this simple swap will give your mani a 3-D feel that your guests won’t be able to pry their eyes from.

And, if you’re jetting off to somewhere tropical for a destination wedding, these freshwater pearl nails give off a beachy vibe without going too over the top. Here’s to the mermaidcore bride.

If there was ever a time to splurge on a luxury nail polish, it’d be now. Dior’s Mitzah Limited Edition “001 Pearl” Vernis Top Coat lends itself perfectly to this set — and will make for a gorgeous little keepsake.

Sugar-glazed chrome polish

A post shared by Alexandra Teleki (@thehotblend)

For a standout set that’s still pared-back enough for a bride to wear, a chrome-coloured manicure is the way to go. Popularized in 2022 by none other than Hailey Bieber, this near-metallic manicure is the look that keeps on giving.

Whether your wedding dress is pure white, ivory or champagne, finding a chrome powder or polish that matches your gown will satisfy every bride’s inner perfectionist. With their mirror-like finish, these nails exude luxurious energy.

Opt for press-ons to ensure your nails are one less thing you’ll have to worry about in the weeks leading up to the wedding. We love Glamnetic’s “Hailey” Press On Nails because they’re reusable, re-shapable and last up to two weeks.

A pop of pearls

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mateja Novakovic (@matejanova)

Hear us out, minimalists. Elevating a barely-there manicure with 3-D pearl beads is the dreamiest way to upgrade your usual nail set this wedding season. While you can stick with a truly minimal look using miniature pearls (like the mani pictured above), the possibilities are endless when it comes to the addition of this traditional bridal stone.

Get creative with placement by adding a few beads all over each nail, in the same spot on each nail, or on just a few to make a statement. And, to add even more dimension, alternate beads of different sizes to create depth.

Decora’s Ivory Flat Back Pearls make application a breeze. What’s more, this pack offers 500 half-round pearls for under $10. Way to budget, future bride!

The Chanel Ombre Essentielle Collection is all about playing with colour on the eyes

Chanel’s new Ombre Essentielle Collection takes inspiration from the French fashion house’s rich heritage. Working closely with the Chanel Makeup Creation studio, Cometes Collective member Cécile Paravina formulated 14 pigment-packed eyeshadows that can be worn along the lashline, eyelids or brows — and paired with one of three new Noir Allure Mascaras from the collection.

“Colour is the most direct way to express an abstract and complex message,” shares Paravina in a press statement. “Keeping to just one makeup colour ensures that the message lands with even more impact.” Speaking of colour, Paravina creatively tied in elements of Chanel’s iconic colour palettes to ensure that each shade paid homage to the brand’s history. The Gris Paris shade, for example, is a nod to the colour of Parisian rooftops, and Coco Chanel’s origin. Très chic, non?

Dyson’s Most Intelligent Hair Dryer Has Arrived

0

Is there anything more fun than being let in on a secret? As I toured Dyson’s massive Research, Design and Development (RDD) campus in Malmesbury, England earlier this year, I was struck (and a little overwhelmed) by the amount of security and confidentiality everywhere. I was scanned in through one door that allowed me to walk exactly ten steps before needing to be scanned in through the next door, and so on and so forth. Had I entered the future? Nearly everything on campus was labelled “CONFIDENTIAL” — including garbage bins. (Seriously!)

So what’s the big secret? Well, it’s not a secret anymore. Dyson just launched its latest hair tool, the Supersonic Nural (plus the super-sleek Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer, though the latter is exclusively for professional stylists). The available-to-consumers Supersonic Nural is an updated version of Dyson’s first foray into hair back in 2016, the Supersonic. You read that right: an even more advanced version of what was already the most technologically advanced hair dryer on the market.

The updates include new sensor technology that protects scalp health by automatically reducing heat as it gets closer to your head. It also has a motion-sensing feature that deactivates the heater and decreases airflow when you’re in between styling passes (like when you set the dryer down to section your hair). This allows Supersonic Nural to cut way back on its energy use.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Dyson Beauty (@dysonbeauty)

“We started working on Nural back in 2021, five years after Supersonic launched,” says Steve Williamson, Hair Care Category Manager, Commercial Engineering RDD Haircare. “Our mission when developing, from an engineering point of view, is ‘all hair types, all hairstyles, less damage’.” Talk about ticking all the boxes. “We always start with [addressing] a problem,” adds Dyson Beauty’s Global President, Kathleen Pierce. “We’re constantly on a journey to understand how our tech can improve experiences.”

A major part of that journey involves watching how people use the products, both through in-lab testing prior to launch, and on social media post-launch. #Dyson currently has 7.7 billion views on TikTok, most of which are videos of users posting GRWM or how-to videos using their Dyson hair tools. “I think I’ve watched every single video. There’s just no shortage of people we can learn from,” says Pierce.

@islandgirlshaz

How to diffuse curls/waves step by step! Not long ago, a friend of Pierce’s sent her a video where she was using one of Dyson’s hair tools. “My friend’s hand was coming up higher [than we’d expected],” says Pierce. “So I immediately showed the video to our engineers, and they were like, ‘Interesting; if she’s holding it there, maybe the tension is different. Maybe we move the silicon strip. And then the next thing I know, they’re ideating solutions for the problem. That’s what’s so brilliant about working with passionate engineers. I think if we’d set out to target consumers, or we’d set out to [follow] a trend, we’d probably end up being behind the curve. When you set out to solve a problem, you’re going to unlock things you would never have anticipated.”

The Sleekest Strappy Sandals to Wear This Summer

0

During warm-weather days, nothing says carefree chicness like a pair of strappy sandals. Whether you style them with a feminine linen dress them down with baggy Bermuda shorts, strappy sandals for women let feet soak up rays while making a sophisticated statement.

How to style strappy sandals in 2024

Experimenting with your sandal rotation is a surefire way to get the most out of your summer wardrobe, says Toronto-based stylish Jaclyn Patterson. “For a more casual ‘fit, opt for a flat and comfortable leather sandal,” she says. “To dress up your look, try a pair of sandals with a one-to-two-inch kitten heel.”

To make a statement in warmer temps, build out an outfit by layering different textures at the top, and leave your legs bare to let the dainty footwear shine. An easy way to achieve styling success? Choose a colourful pair to add vibrancy to every ensemble.

How to make strappy sandals more comfortable

“Opt for a pair of sandals with a thicker sole for cushioning and a width big enough to fit the widest part of your foot,” says Patterson. The sweet spot is straps that fit securely but that are not too snug, she says.

How to stretch strappy sandals

If you put in the effort to break them in, most shoes will fit more comfortably to your foot with time. “Leather is the most reliable material that can stretch, as it molds to your foot and can reshape slightly with wear,” notes Patterson.

In Challengers, There’s Deeper Meaning Behind the Characters’ Shared Clothing

0

Warning: Minor spoilers for Challengers ahead.

Challengers, the new film from director Luca Guadagnino, is a tennis movie in every sense of the word. Except that, it’s really not. Despite the fact that the film centres around the sport, highlighting the grunts, backhands and — most importantly — the sweat, as Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) battle it out on the court, the sport is really only an avenue through which the three characters express their love for one another.

Another way? Through the clothes each one chooses to wear — and, ultimately, share. The film uses shared clothing, mainly between Zendaya and the two men, as a visual way to convey their interconnectedness to one another, even when they’re not all physically together. (Plus, sharing clothes with a lover is categorically hot.)

It should come as no surprise that fashion plays an important role in Challengers. With Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson designing the costumes for the movie (and fashion girlie Zendaya on board), exactly what each character wore was always going to be integral to the story. And it is, with Anderson using brands to convey important messaging about where each character is throughout the timeline of their lives.

As adults, Tashi dons luxe cashmere and Chanel, a nod to her need for, and obtainment of, power. And Art — the calm, buttoned-up ice to Patrick’s fire — is always in stark, crisp Uniqlo whites. He’s inoffensive, and some may say a blank slate for Tashi to project her dreams onto, both on and off the court. While these identifiable brands are important to the individual characters, it’s actually two outwardly normal T-shirts — and their place in two pivotal scenes — that speak to the heart of the film and the complicated dynamic between the trio. Essentially, they can’t exist without one another.

We see this early on in the film. While attending Stanford University together, Art and Tashi sit down for a post-tennis practice lunch in the dining hall. Innocuous at first, their convo quickly turns from tennis to love, or lack thereof, with Art informing Tashi that his longtime BFF and her current boyfriend Patrick isn’t in love with her. Tashi tells him off as only Zendaya can; shutting Art down with a succinct and curt AF: “What makes you think I want someone to be in love with me?” Oof. It’s an intense scene in an already fraught film, a verbal sparring match between lovesick Art and guarded Tashi about, ultimately, their feelings for each other. He wants Tashi and Tashi doesn’t want him, or arguably anyone else.

While Art is effectively trying to push Patrick out of the picture, the pro tennis player is still physically represented in the scene. Throughout their conversation, Tashi dons a now-iconic grey T-shirt emblazoned with “I Told Ya” on it. Whether or not the shirt (available on Loewe) is originally Patrick’s or Tashi’s is up for debate, but as viewers see in later scenes, it becomes synonymous with the former, who picks it up off of Tashi’s dorm room floor amidst their fight and ultimate breakup. Patrick, despite being away on tour, is still an ever-present entity in Art and Tashi’s dynamic.

It’s telling then, that years later in Atlanta, the trio would bump into each other while Patrick is wearing the “I Told Ya” t-shirt; the literal and figurative embodiment of Tashi and Art’s problems and desires combining into one.

More than a decade after first meeting and now in 2019, we see this dynamic reversed when, the night before the big Challengers final match, a 31-year-old Tashi meets up with Patrick to ask him to throw the game in order to boost Art’s confidence. Having come straight from an intimate power struggle with her now-husband Art, Tashi has thrown an oversized plain white men’s T-shirt over her lace nightgown, similar to (or perhaps one of?) the basic tees that Art wears off the court.

Regardless of whether or not it is actually one of her husband’s T-shirts, like Patrick’s “I Told Ya” shirt, it has become synonymous with the tennis player throughout the film, bringing even more depth and meaning to her impassioned conversation and eventual hook-up with Patrick.

Not only does the sharing of clothing, and Tashi donning the pieces in pivotal moments, signal her own internal division — always thinking about one man while in conversation or a relationship with the other — but the interconnectedness of the three. Even in these intimate moments one-on-one with Tashi, both Patrick and Art are never fully out of frame, brought into the scene — and the love triangle — via a piece of clothing.

In these heightened, sometimes erotic moments, even when they’re not all physically together, the trio are still inextricably linked. And that’s the way it has to be for them to function and be truly happy, both on and off the tennis court. It’s a realization the characters themselves have in the final moments of the film when Art and Patrick finally embrace; the realization that they work best when they’re together.

It may be new info to Tashi et al, but this reality — like Patrick and Art’s love for each other — was there all along, all in the form of a T-shirt.
