Crochet Tops Are the Best Way to Stay Cool This Summer

0

When the weather is warm, getting dressed should be fun. As we shed layers and play with length, it’s the best time to infuse experimentation and free-spiritedness into our everyday outfits. Crochet tops allow us to do just that.

How to wear crochet tops

When thinking of crochet tops, it’s easy to picture 1960s hippie fashion, says stylist Nicole Contador. But if you’re after a contemporary look, certain styling tricks can keep it feeling modern. Her first tip is to opt for shades that fit into your wardrobe.

“Choosing more of a neutral tone and pairing it with high-waisted trousers or layering it over a slip dress can create an elevated summery look,” she explains.

For cropped styles, Contador says to look for balance. If you’ve got a tiny lightweight shrug, pair it with baggy cargos for outfit equilibrium. If you’re unsure how long it should be, consider the length of your body. “It’s best to find styles that cut at your waistline to create an hourglass shape.”

Similarly to styling crochet dresses, don’t be afraid to layer! Whether you chose chunky knits for more dimension or monochromatic tones to keep it chic, crochet tops can add texture, dimension and good old fashion joy to summertime dressing.

Our Favourite Colour-Protecting Haircare Products

0

You might think that having metal deposits in your hair is associated with hair dye, but, actually, “we all have metals like copper and iron on our strands, even those of us who have never dyed our hair,” says Carin Freidag, senior manager of global retail hair education at Clairol.

“These metals are deposited by water when we wash our hair.” Then, if you do go on to colour your strands, those metals affect your results. The key to getting them off? Chelating agents. Clairol’s new Nice’n Easy Pure Brunettes collection features the brand’s Detox+Pure Tone system, which starts with a pre-colour cleanser. Essentially acting as a “deep clean,” the cleanser contains chelating agents that react with the metal ions present in hair and remove minerals and other impurities, clarifying hair before dye is applied.

“This will give you a better, more even colour application because the dye will be able to penetrate deeper into the cortex of the hair,” says Freidag. “You’ll really be able to see the difference in how the dye is absorbed.” And, of course, achieving the shade you’re after is only half the battle. Using shampoos and styling products that are formulated with anti-fade technology is sure to extend the lifespan of your new dye job.

Below, shop some of our favourite colour-protecting haircare products.

Clairol Nice’n Easy Pure Brunettes

Clairol’s latest at-home colour launch, the Detox+Pure Tone system, starts with a pre-colour cleanser that purifies the hair from metals before the professional dye complex and intensive treatment can protect the hair from impurities (which get in the way of pure colour results).

Finally, a conditioning treatment, enriched with antioxidants, creates a barrier to preserve rich brunette tones.

There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Whimsy For This Jonathan Anderson Fan

0

They say you should never meet your heroes, but Jonathan Anderson might be the exception — or, at least, it is for Torontonian Tyler Franch, whose closet currently boasts 50+ pieces by the Northern Irish designer. “I met him at one of his after-parties,” begins the fashion and creative director, formerly the vice-president of fashion direction at Hudson’s Bay. “He’s amazing but not what you would expect based on his joyful work,” says Franch. “He’s kind of cynical and over it, but he loves art; he could talk about it all day.”

Since launching JW Anderson in 2008 and becoming the creative director of Loewe in 2013, Anderson has become an artist in his own right. His canvas is clothing, and his style is surrealist, carefully toeing the line between campy and contemporary. While Anderson is perhaps best known for his novelty items (consider his Frog clogs, Pigeon purse, grass collection and more), it was actually his approach to androgynous fashion that started Franch’s infatuation. “There’s a femininity to his menswear,” he shares. “He was the first designer who played with gender in a way that spoke to me and felt authentic to the brand.”

Growing up, the collector was constantly surrounded by beauty. When his hairstylist mother and her friends weren’t dressing him up, Franch was dressing himself in his parent’s curtains. “Being a gay boy in the ’90s meant that I pulled inspiration from not only fashion magazines but pop culture,” he explains, listing the Spice Girls and Sex and the City as prime examples. “Having confidence and pride in what I wore became my security blanket against what was then a much less accepting culture.”

While Franch was never (and still isn’t!) afraid to shop in the women’s section to satisfy his more whimsical wardrobe wants, he was always on the hunt for a menswear brand that better fit his body and aesthetic. That is, until he discovered JW Anderson in 2012 while in London, England, for work. “He celebrates queer culture in almost every collection he makes,” says Franch. “His designs make me feel free — there are no rules, and I love that.”

A decade later, Franch has amassed an art-gallery-worthy amount of Anderson apparel and accessories. Purses proudly line the walls, framed on shelves as if they were Picassos. Chunky novelty shoes are stacked in rows like sculptures. And Franch’s wardrobe itself is sprinkled with varsity stripes, pretty paisleys and other brightly coloured items that would look at home in any modern-art wing.

“That’s the best part about Anderson’s works — they’re pieces of art but totally functional,” he says. “And since I’m financially not ready for my art-collecting era, choosing a fashion designer who can do both has been so fun.”

As such, Franch accessorizes most of his JW Anderson and Loewe items with simple staples, to give his collection the attention it deserves. “I usually just wear one piece; otherwise it can feel like a lot,” shares Franch, describing his style as “preppy with a twist.”

But ultimately, what keeps this collector coming back for more is Anderson’s element of surprise mixed with his unique sense of humour and playfulness. “I’ve heard him say he loves to annoy people, and I think being provocative in fashion is so exciting,” shares Franch. “Wearing his designs makes me feel like I’m not just another lemming out there — it makes me feel special.” Hero worship, indeed.

If there’s one thing we know about Dyson, it’s that there’s always something bigger and better just around the corner. Case in point: the announcement of the Supersonic Nural™ Hair Dryer that came earlier this week at a Dyson launch event in Seoul, South Korea. A level-up from the existing Supersonic, the Supersonic Nural prioritizes hair and scalp health by utilizing sensors to activate innovative styling modes (like Scalp Protect mode and the Pause to detect feature) to help minimize heat damage.

“If you’re able to limit heat damage, you can get a healthier scalp; and healthier hair,” says brand founder and chief engineer James Dyson in a press statement. “Our new Supersonic Nural has a time of flight sensor which recognizes your head and reduces the heat as it gets close to your hair, preventing heat damage to both your scalp and hair.”

The Nural will be available to shop in Canada in two aesthetically pleasing blue colourways as of May 2, and will come equipped with five attachments, including the new Wave+Curl diffuser designed for wavy and curly hair.

Introducing Canada’s Most Stylish Thrifter 2024, Maidene Morris-Dixon

0

Maidene Morris-Dixon was surprised when she learned that she had been declared Canada’s Most Stylish Thrifter for 2024. Her friends and family, however, were not. In fact, it was a fellow stylist working with Morris-Dixon on a pilot for a new CBC Gem show who sent her the link to FASHION’s callout for submissions. “She said, ‘You need to do this; I can so see you being selected,’” Morris-Dixon recalls.

Morris-Dixon often starts shopping by searching the men’s racks, which is where she found this suit at Value Village. Shirt, Just Thrift. Earrings, AKA.The Store. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

The 53-year-old mother of two from Orangeville, Ont., sent us images of herself in three thrifted looks: a shapely checked blazer, faux-fur shawl and metal-studded miniskirt that screamed “Balmain runway”; a Paris street-style combo of oversized ostrich-leather jacket, big white shirt and frayed denim short shorts with heels; and a gold kimono with matching clutch and boots that would be perfectly at home on the Met Gala red carpet.

“She’s giving Cynthia Erivo vibes,” one of our FASHION team members remarked. And what was meant to be an hours-long judging session was over in a matter of minutes.

This animal-themed look was one of Morris-Dixon’s submissions that impressed the ‘FASHION’ judges. All the items are from Value Village, purchased separately over a period of 10 years. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

After meeting Morris-Dixon, we knew we had chosen well. In our initial chat over Zoom, she spoke to us from her mother’s house in Mississauga, where the overflow of her wardrobe is stored, and shared how she would dress in weekly themes when she was working in marketing for TJX Canada, the parent company of Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense. “I would do a whole week of leopard,” she said. Or head-to-toe green. Or prints. “I could probably do a month of leather, I have so much,” she laughed. Her main aim wasn’t to amuse her colleagues, though she certainly did that. “I wanted to be able to make use of what I had bought and also showcase my talent. Putting things together brings me joy.”

Since leaving the corporate world, she has been strutting her stuff for a different audience. “Church is my runway now,” she says. “People actually come up to me and say, ‘I look forward to seeing what you have on.’”

Morris-Dixon and her mother sewed this collection of 36 thrifted ties into a dress. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

As we watched Morris-Dixon style herself for our shoot, it was clear that she has an expert’s eye for proportion, texture mixing and colour. Case in point: the tailored military jacket she paired with a tassel dress. And the collection of 36 neckties her mother helped her sew into a dress.

Like a true fashion stylist, Morris-Dixon doesn’t buy fits. She walks the aisles and plucks pieces that catch her eye from the racks and then takes them home, where they often hang unworn until she finds the perfect mate. For our shoot, she combined a Dolce & Gabbana skirt she scored for $34 last June with a matching polka-dot Zara top she had thrifted more than a year prior. But most surprising is that the Dolce skirt is one of the few recognizable names in her wardrobe. In fact, she is probably the least label-conscious fashion person we’ve ever encountered.

“If it looks good on me, and the colours, patterns or textures speak to me, that’s what I’m going for,” she says. “I just love finding unique pieces. I don’t like looking like everybody else. So thrifting is it for me.” And while she has her favourite spots — Just Thrift in North York and multiple Value Village locations in Mississauga — she will thrift anywhere, any time.

This Zara top and Mahima Mahajan skirt are both from Value Village, purchased many months apart. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

She was waiting at a stoplight in Caledon last June when she spotted the gold kimono in a store window. “I was late to meet my mom, and I was on the phone with my daughter. I said: ‘I gotta go. I’ll call you back.’ I pulled in and parked, and I think I only paid $29 for it,” she says. The gold boots that pair so well with it were purchased pre-COVID from Just Thrift. “They were having a designer sale, and I saw those boots in a video they posted on Instagram. I didn’t know if they were my size, but I got there early and was one of the first people in line. And they fit!”

Morris-Dixon only got into thrifting 10 years ago, when a friend first took her to Talize in Brampton. “I remember walking around following somebody who had a black bustier with off-white trim,” she says. “I kid you not, I waited for that person to put it back. [She still has the bustier.] I still do that. Just the other day, I saw this guy looking at a green 3-D sweater and he was hemming and hawing. And I thought, ‘Bro, you have no idea what you have in your hand.’ So I waited, and luckily he put the sweater back.”

Morris-Dixon found this authentic military jacket at Urban Catwalk in Toronto’s Kensington Market. The tassel dress under it is from Value Village, and the clutch is from the Leslieville Flea. Shoes, Saks Fifth Avenue. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

Though she was already in her 40s when she started thrifting, Morris-Dixon says that fashion has been a creative outlet for her since she was a child. “My mom tells a story about how when I was seven or eight years old and we were heading to church, I forgot my quote, unquote jewellery, which was actually plastic accessories.” She insisted on going back inside the house so she could complete her look.

That was around the time the family emigrated from Jamaica, where Morris-Dixon used to wear a uniform to school. Her mom also tended to dress Morris-Dixon and her sister, who is a year younger, like twins. “And my mom, being a seamstress, used to take me with her to the fabric store, where I would flip through the pattern books while I waited for her.” In Canada, Morris-Dixon was exposed to more fashion and didn’t have to wear a uniform, which gave her the urge to experiment. She acknowledges that she’s a bit of a chameleon, even with her hair — it’s currently blond and buzzed, but she has worn it as a red faux hawk and in locs. “I am all over the place with my style,” she says. “It just depends on what is feeding my soul at the time.”

Clutch, Value Village. Boots, Just Thrift. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan University), Morris-Dixon entered the workforce in marketing, but helping friends and co-workers style themselves or their homes became a sideline. Then, around 10 years ago, she put her talent to the test by launching a business called Styling Head to Toe. “People at my son’s school would walk up to me and ask: ‘What do you do? Because you’re always so fashionably dressed,’” she recalls. “Random people in stores would always come up to me when I was shopping and say, ‘I just want to know what you think of this.’ And my sister said to me, ‘I think you need to make this a business.’ My intention was to do personal styling, but what seemed to take off was the reselling of items. So I started to do pop-ups at the Leslieville Flea and the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show. I loved that people would come back each year and look for my stall. What I didn’t love was the time it took away from my kids, because at that time, I was a single mom and these events were on the weekends.”

Morris-Dixon uses double-sided tape to wear this kimono from Talize as a dress. All the jewellery on this page is from Value Village, except where noted. Photography by Alpheus Anthony Newby

She closed that down in 2016 and went to work for TJX Canada. The desire to do her own styling thing lingered, but with a mortgage to pay, she was nervous. “I was afraid to take a chance on myself and really go with what everybody else seemed to see,” she laments.

Then, just before the COVID lockdowns hit, with her children older and more independent, Morris-Dixon left corporate life and dived back into wardrobe styling and interior decorating along with home staging. And she is breaking into the world of TV and film, working for the production company Shaftesbury on a couple of CBC Gem shows. This is perfect because, like many fashion lovers, she is a constant shopper. “I try not to, but I have a real issue,” she admits. “It’s an addiction, especially when it comes to thrift shopping. There is definitely a high for me when I find something unique. I get really stoked about great finds.”

But Morris-Dixon also wants to use her talent for the greater good. “I would love to work with young women and children on body image,” she says. “And help people who are getting into the workforce, because there are a lot of ways you can look good on a budget.” In the meantime, thrifting provides the tools for her art. “I have far too much going on up here in terms of creativity,” she smiles, pointing to her head.

Maidene Morris-Dixon shares her top thrifting tips:

1. Don’t be a label snob. There are many obscure European designers who deliver excellent quality.

2. Don’t be shy about haggling. “I’m frugal,” Morris-Dixon declares. “Sometimes I’ll say: ‘There’s a little wear here. Do you think you can do better on the price?’”

3. Shop the “put-backs” — items people have tried on and then hung at the end of a rack. And if the store has a change room, look for what people have left there as well.

4. Go often, and vary locations. Morris-Dixon has found matching pieces of a set, including an Adidas track suit, in two different locations a year apart.

5. Search Google while you shop to confirm whether you have scored an incredible find or whether an item is worth the price. You may be able to negotiate a better deal based on what you learn.

The 9 Best Travel Bags for Men 2024

0

If I could guess, I’d bet there’s one item in your closet that you haven’t replaced in a long time. It’s worn, torn in some places and most likely sporting some duct tape patches. Yup, you guessed it — it’s your travel bag — and it’s time for an upgrade!

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or do an annual road trip, investing in one of the best travel bags for men is a crucial part of creating a seamless travel experience.

From weekender duffles to a top-tier carry-on, these bags are ensured to make the travel process easier. Think: spacious pockets, sturdy zippers and easy-to-spin wheels.

Bonus: while you’re at it, consider these carry-on essentials and the mini beauty products to level up your travel game.

What to look for in the best travel bags for men

When searching for the ideal travel bag, it’s important to find something versatile that can any trip. “In a travel bag, carry-on or check-in, it’s important to look for something that suits your particular needs, like [being] spacious or durable or that it has the necessary handles or spinners,” says travel expert Brittany Betts.

For a short trip, Betts recommends a bag with easily segmented sections to pack your clothes and essentials. “But it doesn’t need to be too spacious,” she adds. “These can also be soft, if you prefer, small, easy to carry and light.”

If you’re headed on a longer getaway, the travel specialist suggests a suitcase that is sturdy, durable and hard-bodied. “[Find] something with a lot of room that you can preferably check in with a lot of different organizational sections and zippers to easily separate everything.”

Ultimately, the best travel bag thrives when it’s effectively packed. “Pack the same way every time you pack. It’s easy to forget things when you kind of just throw everything in there together,” says Betts.

“If you separate [your belongings] and always pack them in the same zippers and pouches, I find this is an easier way to do a once-over checklist to make sure you have everything that you need.”

Pretty Sure Emily Ratajkowski Just Invented “Divorce Rings”

0

Marriage may not be forever, but for Emily Ratajkowski, diamonds definitely are. On March 19, the model and actor shared the newest addition to her jewellery box: a pair of stunning diamond rings designed by jeweller Alison Lou. If the carats looked familiar to fans, that because they are.

Captioning the series of photos with “divorce rings,” Ratajowski revealed that she’d re-designed her iconic toi et moi engagement ring into two separate (and similarly striking) diamond rings. It’s chic as heck, and has us wondering: Is divorce jewellery about to become a thing? We’re thinking, yes.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata)

ICYMI, Emrata filed for divorce from husband Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2022 after four years of marriage. The couple share a son together and the news of their split came after months of cheating rumours surrounding Bear-McClard. In the wake of her divorce, the model was seen exploring the dating pool, spotted out and about with comedian Eric André, court-side with Pete Davidson and locking lips with bona fide hunky pop star Harry Styles.

And, like any woman who is just living her life, Emrata faced backlash for her divorce and dating as a mom. And now, she’s hitting back at the haters by not only embracing her single status, but by celebrating it with some new jewels.

In an interview with Vogue, Ratajkowski spoke about the significance of redesigning her ring. “The rings represent my own personal evolution,” Ratajkowski told Vogue.“I don’t think a woman should be stripped of her diamonds just because she’s losing a man.”

Emrata is by no means the first person scorned — or liberated — to leave a marriage and take their rock (or rocks) with them. Historically, after the end of an engagement or marriage, women have kept their rings. There’s some debate over where this practice comes from, with some sources saying it stems from the (outdated and problematic) idea that divorced women are “damaged goods” and thus should receive the ring as compensation. While we don’t *love* that mentality (FYI, women’s value and worth isn’t predicated on whether or not they have a partner), we can never be bitter about the opportunity for people to reclaim and reframe their narrative.

Which is exactly what people are afforded the opportunity to do when they hold onto their engagement rings or wedding jewellery. While some decide to return the ring, others choose to sell it to purchase something that helps secure future stability (actress Jana Kramer famously sold one of her two engagement rings from ex Mike Caussin to renovate her home), have the ring made into other pieces of jewellery (like a a pair of diamond earrings or a solitaire necklace), or in the case of Sex and the City‘s Charlotte York, give it to a financially irresponsible and shoe-obsessed friend so they can buy their Manhattan apartment (ahem, Miss Carrie Bradshaw). In fact, many jewellers who sell engagement rings and wedding bands also offer divorce jewellery — redesigning engagement rings post-marriage — as an additional service.

Whatever people do with their diamonds, the important part is that it’s their decision; allowing people to take something that may have difficult memories attached to it and turn it into an heirloom that brings them joy. Alongside the rise of redesigning rings, many divorced people are making the decision to purchase an entirely new piece of jewellery to symbolize and celebrate divorce; whether that’s a ring featuring a stone from the month their divorce was finalized or buying an antique cocktail ring that says “I love me.”

All the girls are doing it, including Princess Diana, who was reportedly gifted an aquamarine cocktail ring after her divorce from then-Prince Charles in August 1996. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, wore the ring during her May 2018 wedding reception. While there’s still speculation over whether or not this was a “divorce ring” per se, the royal did wear it predominantly on her ring finger in the months after her divorce.

Something that is new about Ratajowski’s divorce jewellery is the decision to separate her toi et moi engagement ring and create two distinct rings with the pair of stones. This was entirely purposeful, according to Alison Lou’s creative director Alison Chemla, who worked on Emrata’s ring. “The idea of divorce is a separation,” Chemla told Vogue, “so it was always going to be splitting the ring into two separate but complementary rings.”

The idea of celebrating Ratajkowski’s personal journey through her jewellery is a beautiful one, reframing her divorce not as a failure (because it’s not), but as one part of her ongoing story. And that’s something we can get behind. The diamonds don’t hurt, either.
