Between Two Closets: Finding My Personal Style In the Post-Tumblr Era

0

Everyone dressed the same in the suburban neighbourhood where I grew up. The uniform consisted of graphic tees, heather grey sweatpants from Roots and canvas camo print jackets from American Eagle. While this homogeneity was difficult to navigate as a Black queer kid in a small town, it was the catalyst for an obsession with expressing my identity through disruptive fashion.

I spent my teenage years pouring over Black creatives on my Tumblr feed, like Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing during the fashion house’s arguably flashiest era and writer Rian Phin‘s love of loud eye-ball print pieces from the KESH x American Apparel collection.

Once Tumblr’s reputation as a resource for all things “cutting edge” waned, I was hesitant to embrace the many microtrends popularized on TikTok. The digital landscape in the post-Tumblr era is an entirely different maze to navigate and without my cultural compass to guide me, I felt exposed and unremarkable. Now, apps like TikTok are marketing identities for me to fit into when I barely have a grasp on my own.

The good thing about my suburban echo chamber was knowing the limitations that were built around my identity and how to surpass them; to do this through fashion empowered me. But seeing the art form that I used as armour to protect me from bigotry be used as a marketing tool, at times aestheticizing the microaggressiveness of the Western-European fashion I grew up with (see: the “clean girl” aesthetic), made me disillusioned. It caused me to question whether fashion was still a space for singular voices if it contained all these disposable multitudes. Was my voice authentic by comparison?

In my closet hangs a green zebra print Kenzo jumpsuit, a rhinestone beaded logo T-shirt from club wear brand MISBHV. I’d spent years collecting pieces like this as a way of affirming my individuality. But feeling like everyone was moving on in their style journey without me — even if they were embracing all the same TikTok microtrends — made me realize I was actualizing a small town prophecy in my own closet: staying the same and avoiding growth.

The way that trends like the mob wife aesthetic and fairycore appear and disappear at breakneck speed convinces me that disruption is only as effective as it is timely. I’m 25 now, no longer living to escape the prejudice-infested neighbourhoods of my youth. Last year, reading bell hooks’ 1992 collection of essays Race and Representation helped me come to this realization. She highlights the challenge of building representation around reactions to prejudice, essentially allowing Western-European standards to insidiously center themselves in the lives of Black folks.

I decided that the most healing, freeing gift I could give myself was to embark on a mission: I would experiment with different aesthetics and see which one (or ones) felt right. Here’s what I learned about myself through trying three fashion microtrends.

The office siren

Photography courtesy of Harrison Clarke

I fell hard for the office siren look. As a Prada collector, I’ve always been a big fan of geek chic and all its manic, brocade-woven glamour. But if the chic geek screams, the office siren whispers. To embrace the office siren vibe, I immersed myself in the work of New York-based designer Mark Gong, whose work focuses primarily on black, grey or white bell-sleeve knit cardigans, slinky dresses with pin-thin spaghetti straps and sheer tights. The key to the office siren aesthetic is taking styles that are native to business dressing and injecting them with dramatic draping and sneaky slits of skin that wink at evening wear.

My summer 2023 was spent cutting up oversized pinstripe trousers from Value Village into Miu Miu-length short shorts. The old me would’ve paired them with loud button-ups but I chose an oversized white T-shirt and black wraparound shades instead; what makes this disruption so effective is being able to see the thought process behind the restraint.

Gorpcore

Photography courtesy of Harrison Clarke

It excited me to get my hands dirty with gorpcore. I’d spent so much time making my clothes match my social environment that I never stopped to consider the natural environment growing around me. The gorpcore aesthetic takes practical, weather-focused, action-ready pieces and styles them in a streetwear context. My white Keds got soaked once the autumn rain came and I had to turn to a stronger companion, the Yeezy Boost 350 V2’s in the clay colorway.

Other great gorpcore finds included a thrifted vintage leather trench coat from Penningtons and nylon cargos from Dickies; all black and in large, body-obscuring silhouettes that provided me more protection and confident restraint than my Elmo-Red, vintage varsity bomber ever could.

Quiet luxury

Photography courtesy of Harrison Clarke

Quiet luxury is like that guy who could change your life if you could just figure out how to get close to him. When I did, the aesthetic swept me off my feet. After spending a year styling clients in business casual styles at the ill-fated Nordstrom Canada, I studied my own methods before turning them onto myself. At the Californian-based label James Perse, I found staples that turned out to be the best basics I’d ever owned; finely woven cream cashmere sweaters, Japanese denim with the perfect slim-waist-to-wide-thigh ratio and grey french terry cotton sweats with a clean silhouette. Instead of scrambling to make a statement in a chaotic garment, it feels just as poignant to be wear an expertly crafted piece that was a no-brainer to casually slip on.

After a year of playing in the fashion space, the biggest lesson was that my journey for accurate representation of myself as a Black, queer person will never end. The beauty of that longevity is the way it affirms my identity against the expectations of Western-European standards without even trying, this identity innately refuses definition in the traditional sense. If fashion is ever-evolving, I choose to champion the growth of my communities by publicly growing with it.

An investigative exhibition is coming to the Bata Shoe Museum

Love a good murder mystery? Over at Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum, Exhibit A: Investigating Crime and Footwear is opening to the public on April 18 and will run for 18 months. The exhibition looks at the social constructs of criminal activity from the nineteenth century through to today, and considers how clothing and footwear influence cultural ideas informed by assumptions and bias. Simply put, it attempts to show the ways in which crime and footwear intersect.

Curated by Bata Shoe Museum Director and Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack and Dr. Alison Matthews David, a professor at the School of Fashion at Toronto Metropolitan University, museum-goers can expect to be surprised by what they see and learn.

Some exhibit highlights include “Flannelfoot,” a look at London’s most famous house burglar who was known for wrapping his feet in flannel cloths to muffle and mask his footsteps (he was finally caught in 1937 after a notorious 25-year career of petty crime!) to “High Top Sneakers,” which unveils that once upon a time, the word sneaker was used to describe criminals, as the rubber soles allowed wearers to sneak around making virtually no noise.

Who Is Sabrina Carpenter?

0

Chances are you’ve probably heard something about Sabrina Carpenter. The singer and actress has been all over the internet — and the globe — in the last year. She released the hit album Emails I Can’t Send, embarked on a global tour with Taylor Swift, started dating one of Hollywood’s most eligible (and *ahem* cheeky) bachelors and most, recently starred, in the spring campaign for Skims. Did we mention Sabrina Carpenter is only 24 years old? Here’s everything to know about the “Nonsense” singer.

Chances are, you probably recognize Sabrina Carpenter

Even if you don’t know her by name, you probably know her by aesthetic. Since the release of her July 2022 album Emails I Can’t Send Carpenter has embraced a distinct pop star look, rocking thigh-high white platform boots and mini-dresses. With a love for bows, curtain bangs and pastel colours, the singer’s whole vibe is a throwback to the early 2000s (when she would have, in fact, only been a kindergartener), making you feel like she just stepped out of a pink Motorola Razr-dotted world.

A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter)

Sabrine Carpenter has been in a ton of movies and TV shows you’ve probably seen

While she’s focusing on her music career lately, Carpenter actually began her career like many pop stars do — on the Disney channel.

After roles in sitcoms like The Goodwin Games and a guest role on Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit, Carpenter was cast in Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World (for us millennials, this was a spin-off of Boy Meets World). As the sidekick to Cory and Topanga Matthews’ teenage daughter, Carpenter became a fan fave, starring on the show until 2017 and recording the show’s theme song alongside her co-star Rowan Blanchard.

In 2018, Carpenter moved into her movie era, popping up in films like The Hate U Give and Tall Girl, and in 2020 she starred in the Netflix dance movie Work It. (She was also a producer, which we love for her.)

Her music is pure pop

While Carpenter has made a name for herself on-screen, her musical talents are, TBQH, really where it’s at. Early on in her musical career, Carpenter became known for her pop-infused sound.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter)

But in 2022, with the release of her Emails I Can’t Send, the singer really came into her own. The album addressed a variety of topics, from infidelity and family dynamics, to first loves and self-love, and gave us bangers like “Nonsense” and “Feather,” the latter of which became a point of contention with the Catholic church. It’s no surprise that Carpenter has a Taylor Swift connection, because her songwriting and vocals are just as heart-wrenching and captivating as Swift’s.

She’s been at the centre of some serious Gen Z pop culture drama

And of course, before the release of her latest album, and partly addressed on the album, there was *the drama.* Before Carpenter was widely known in pop culture for her expert songwriting and A+ vocals, she was involved in some messiness with another Disney star turned pop singer, Olivia Rodrigo.

Then relatively unknown outside of Disney, Rodrigo released her first single, “Driver’s License” in 2021. It was an instant hit, about teen love lost, centred around a guy who left Rodrigo for “that blonde girl.” At the time, many fans of the young singer assumed the song was about her Highschool Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett, whom she’d been previously linked to, and who Carpenter — an older blonde girl — was then currently involved with. Naturally, fans assumed Bassett had broken Rodrigo’s heart, dumping her for Carpenter.

To say fans took their theory to the next level is an understatement. The song not only launched Rodrigo’s musical career, but led to tons of vitriol towards Carpenter, who would go on to detail her experience in the song “Because I Liked a Boy.”

Sabrina Carpenter is currently dating one Barry Keoghan, one of Hollywood’s buzziest rising stars

You’re nothing in Hollywood if you don’t have a steamy romantic connection (at least in the eyes of tabloids), and when it comes to romance, Carpenter has been linked to several stars. In addition to her rumoured relationship with Bassett, the singer has been linked to actor Dylan O’Brien, and in January 2023 was photographed out and about in Los Angeles with Canadian singer Shawn Mendes. In a March 2023 interview, Mendes shot down the speculation, claiming that he was “not dating Sabrina,” but fans weren’t necessarily buying it.

In any case, by late 2023, Carpenter was rumoured to be dating Irish actor Barry Keoghan after allegedly meeting at a Givenchy Spring 2024 show in Paris (chic!). By December of that year, the couple were photographed out for dinner together. Since the start of 2024, the  couple have seemingly confirmed their relationship status to be true, popping up together everywhere from museum dates in Los Angeles to concerts in Singapore.

A post shared by W Magazine (@wmag)

In March of this year, Keoghan was spotted several times supporting Carpenter on the Singapore leg of the Eras Tour with Taylor Swift (Carpenter is opening for the mega-star), with the couple spotted embracing after one of the shows.

Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan hugging at the Eras Tour. pic.twitter.com/dSQbEBTvyA

— Pop Crave (@PopCrave) March 4, 2024

And just days after supporting his girl across the globe. the duo walked the carpet one after the other at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party (and posed for photos together inside). This was also shortly after Keoghan attended an Academy Awards dinner donning a beaded “Sabrina” bracelet.  The couple have also been all up in each other’s social media comments, leaving flirty messages and emojis on each others posts. (Nothing says “we’re in a relationship” more than an expertly placed emoji.)

Seriously, the man is obsessed.

She’s close to Taylor Swift

Arguably the greatest moment of Carpenter’s career so far is the fact that she opened for Taylor Swift’s history-making Eras Tour on several legs, travelling the world — and singing alongside — the megastar (and Carpenter’s own musical idol).

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter)

Reflecting on the experience in March of this year, after wrapping up her time on the tour, Carpenter wrote: “…And the most thank you’s I’ve ever thank you’d to Taylor. I feel so lucky to witness the magic that is you and this tour. there is truly no one like you and there never will be! i love you with all my heart and i will cherish this taybrina era (and all the eras) till the end of time 💞💞💞.”

Sabrina Carpenter’s Skims campaign is major — but not without controversy

Given the epic year Carpenter has had, it makes sense that she would land a huge campaign. Leave it to Skims to cast the latest It girl. Regardless of how you may feel about Kim Kardashian, her famous family and her sometimes problematic practices, the fact is Skims has become the Call Her Daddy of brands: An arbiter of taste that taps into the up-and-coming and most zeitgeist-y talent of the moment. And that’s exactly what Carpenter is.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter)

Despite that fact, Carpenter’s connection to Swift means that not everyone was thrilled with her latest career move. Shortly after the campaign was announced, Carpenter’s social media comments were inundated with people saying they were “disappointed” in Carpenter, and asking: “Why Skims? I thought you and Tay were friends.”

ICYMI, Swift and Kardashian have a tense history, feuding publicly since February 2016 when Kardashian’s then-husband Kanye West released the song “Famous” which featured a controversial lyric about Swift. After Swift swiped back at West during her 2016 Grammy acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Kardashian released a video of Swift reportedly approving the lyric, something she had denied. This all led to Swift’s entire Reputation era, and needless to say, fans of the singer have never really gotten past it. TL;DR? It’s a whole messy mess.

And TBH, it’s a mess that really shouldn’t affect Carpenter. Just because she’s tied to Swift through business doesn’t mean she shouldn’t also be able to work with other people in the industry. It is her career after all, and Carpenter is rightfully entitled to get her bag. And chances are, with a hot new man, the seal of approval from brands of the moment and a voice that sounds like a literal angel, those opportunities will just keep coming.

In Love Lies Bleeding, Strength Is Satirical

0

Love Lies Bleeding is a film that thrives on contradictions. It’s both sexy and disgusting; delicately romantic but gluttonous with gore; set in a stagnant town yet brimming with otherworldly elements. Most importantly, its depictions of power are purposely all over the place.

The A24 lesbian thriller, directed by Rose Glass, takes place in a sleepy New Mexico setting in 1989. It follows Lou (Kristen Stewart), a scrawny sullen gym manager with a stringy mullet, and Jackie (Katie M. O’Brien) a jacked-up drifter with her heart set on winning big at a Las Vegas bodybuilding show. The pair meet when Jackie starts training at Lou’s gym, and the rest is U-Haul history. (They move in together after one night.)

From there, the film takes viewers on a twisted ride full of deadly crime, bodily fluids and some pretty unnerving bug-related scenes. In a town where unchecked male violence is systemic, their murderous journey is a scrappy, toxic love story. Through it all, strength — acquiring untapped physical abilities, wielding force over someone else, trying to gain control of one’s own thoughts — is something that Lou and Jackie are constantly grappling with.

Jackie is the perfect example of this struggle; her muscle mass acting as a shield for her vulnerability. In their relationship, she is often the one who needs saving. The stronger she gets — with the help of steroid injections and obsessive training — the more mentally unhinged she becomes.

The aforementioned gym where they spend much of their time is dingy and dark, populated by beefed-up predatory men. The walls are plastered with signs that read, “Only losers quit,” “Pain is weakness leaving the body” and other nightmarish edicts that come from the hardcore coaches. Jackie, in her She-Hulk disposition, is seemingly at home in this environment.

But as her body bulges to unthinkable proportions, she enters deeper into a drug-filled haze where the lines of reality are blurred. Her beefy exterior is but a superficial distraction from her role as a damsel-in-distress. She is both femme-presenting — wearing crop tops and Daisy Dukes — and imposingly muscular, embodying the two oxymoronic traits at once.

Lou, in contrast, is spindly and small but does much of the heavy lifting (both mentally and physically). If she’s not trying to save Jackie, she’s cleaning up her messes. All the while, most of the so-called strong men around them are either useless or straight-up evil. By flipping these tropes, Love Lies Bleeding presents a takedown of glorified cinematic masculinity.

With this narrative strategy, it also works to subvert Hollywood’s standards and expectations for womanhood, queerness and female empowerment. Director Rose Glass reportedly dreamed up Love Lies Bleeding as a cheeky retort to industry pressure to craft a story about “strong female characters.” According to Kristen Stewart, Glass took those reductive demands literally by presenting a plot about a woman bodybuilder. The fact that the film stars two publicly out queer actors makes it even more of a rarity in mainstream movie-making.

Love Lies Bleeding’s irreverence to conventional notions of power and physicality extend beyond the big screen. At the film’s premiere, Kristen Stewart leaned into suggestive sexuality in an ultra-high-cut hip-baring leotard. On the talk show circuit, she served a series of scandalously sexy ensembles, from sheer stockings and latex suspenders to a pair of Grandmacore-esque knit underwear.

As Dazed noted, with these outré outfits, Stewart “[wielded] sexuality in a way that completely excludes men from the conversation.” Surrounding the film’s release, these subversive statements have been further immortalized as pop culture canon, from Kristen Stewart’s suggestive Rolling Stone cover to the steamy photoshoot she and O’Brien did together for Them.

Throughout the story itself, strength is more of a question mark than an objective aspiration. Its biggest power-flexing moments are shrouded in paranormal confusion, and binaries of “good” vs. “bad” are left bleared. It’s a delightfully messy ride, and thanks to its fixation on mocking strength, Love Lies Bleeding is also a release of female rage and a rebuttal on markers of masculinity.

Anya Taylor-Joy Had a Gothic Wedding Fit for a Vampire

0

Florals for spring? Not so groundbreaking. But have you considered anatomically correct human hearts? Anya Taylor-Joy definitely has. On April 1, the Dune: Part Two actor shared photos from her wedding to Malcolm McRae. The pair seemingly tied the knot in Venice, Italy in October 2023, but surprise! That wasn’t their first — or actual — marriage ceremony.

As Taylor-Joy revealed, the couple held a secret ceremony in New Orleans on April 1, 2022, meaning the pair legally wed 18 months ahead of their big shindig in romantic Italia. “Two years ago, on April Fools, I secretly married my best friend in New Orleans,” Taylor-Joy captioned the carousel of photos and videos. “The magic of that day is ingrained in every cell of my being, forever. Happy second ( first ) anniversary my love…you’re the coolest🫀”

While we’re all for a covert wedding — the secrecy! the sexiness! the not having to stress over a guest list! — we’re especially in love with Taylor-Joy’s secret nuptials because one look at the Anya Taylor-Joy wedding photos confirms that it was a gothic, vampire-inspired fever dream. Not only did they tie the knot in New Orleans, one of the spookiest cities in the United States (home to both mythical and IRL vampires), but their choice of venue, where they celebrated with friends like Cara Delevingne, giving Phantom of the Opera realness, all drippy candles and moody floral arrangements.

Taylor-Joy’s wedding dress, the same she wore to her Italian ceremony in October of last year, was custom Dior in a dusty champagne colour. Paired with a cathedral-length veil, the actor struck a hauntingly angelic image. Can you say ethereal? (And a little bit undead? In the best way possible, of course.)

And then, the hearts. Oh yes, there were hearts; anatomically correct cake hearts that deserve a prize-winning spot on Is It Cake? season 4, to be exact. Taylor-Joy made reference to the human hearts — and the locale — further down in her caption, writing:  “Yes, I am the vampire Lestat.” (a vampire character from the Anne Rice novel Interview with the Vampire, set in New Orleans). The flavour has to be red velvet, right?

Regardless of whether or not you feel hungry or just a little queasy at the idea of noshing on something that resembles a human heart, we’re here for all of this. Maybe it’s because millennials are *ahem* thirsting for our youth and the days when Twilight and The Vampire Diaries reigned supreme, or perhaps it’s the chill of winter that’s still brutally hanging on in many parts of the country, but there’s something very romantic about exchanging vows under the soft, moody glow of candlelight, surrounded by blood red blooms. It just screams romance, not to mention inexpensive lighting bills.

Plus, just think of all the divine fashion you could lean into — as either a wedding guest or the bride — including rich velvets and dramatic crimson chiffon gowns from The Vampire’s Wife, and statement shoulders from Rodarte. C’est chic!

We’re officially calling it: Vampire-themed weddings are about to have a big moment — no blood-letting required.

5 Holy Grail Products for Hair Growth

0

“Patients come to me with hair-loss concerns every single day — literally,” says Dr. Neera Nathan, a Boston-based dermatologist. “For years, I’d offer the same two or three treatments in my clinic — minoxidil, platelet-rich plasma and sometimes spironolactone. I’d never heard of plant-based ingredients that could actually help.” In 2020, Nathan was introduced to hair-care brand Vegamour, which launched at Sephora Canada this January.

“I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there is data showing that topical ingredients like caffeine, turmeric and red clover can stimulate hair growth.” In addition, Vegamour’s Gro Revitalizing Shampoo and Conditioner are formulated with Karmatin, a vegan alternative to keratin. “It coats the hair, making it instantly look thicker, and stays on for three or four washes,” she says.

Vancouver-based hair-care brand Xyon also offers products to “stimulate hair growth and reduce shedding, using natural DHT-blocking ingredients like saw palmetto,” says Dr. Simon Pimstone, clinician and founder of the brand. “DHT is a form of testosterone that can contribute to female pattern hair loss, and our Nourish Hair Oil is designed to reduce inflammation and lower levels of DHT in the scalp.”

These Perfumers Are Reducing Their Environmental Impact

0

Once upon a time, a person might approach shopping for a new fragrance by considering a scent’s splashy, celeb-fronted ad campaign or its eye-catching bottle design. But in recent years, shoppers have grown more concerned with another aspect of their olfactory obsession: a fragrance’s environmental impact.

Just like it has revolutionized every other beauty category, sustainability has changed how fragrances are developed — and purchased. Today, perfumers are considering the carbon footprint of their creations as much as the layering of the notes themselves. And it’s not just the new kids on the block who are cleaning up the fragrance industry; heritage houses are also working to reduce their impact on the environment, with refillable bottles and eco-friendly formulations.

Guerlain’s nature-inspired refillable Aqua Allegoria fragrances showcase its commitment to protecting the environment. Cécile Lochard, the brand’s former chief sustainability officer, notes that the switch to using sugar-beet alcohol, which prevents the use of certain pesticides, in all of its Aqua Allegoria scents is a major achievement. “The development of an organic alcohol shows how fast the race to improve sustainable sourcing is now moving,” she says. For the Aqua Allegoria collection’s latest launch, Florabloom, Guerlain partnered with organic-flower growers in Grasse to source a buttery enfleurage of tuberose.

“I think we’re going to see a lot more discussion around not only eco-friendly materials but also fair-trade conditions,” predicts Emma Vernon, the self-proclaimed “perfume-obsessed” host of the Perfume Room podcast. Brands are focusing on more sustainable manufacturing practices, including the working conditions and economic opportunities of those harvesting the ingredients that make up a fragrance, she says. “While sustainability is a huge piece of the puzzle, consumers want to know that they’re supporting something that’s ethical across the board.”

To further reduce waste, some fragrance aficionados are choosing to humbly build out their scent wardrobes with curated discovery sets, subscription-based trial sizes or decanted samples instead of gratuitously filling their shelves with pricey — and often underused — full-size bottles. As a result, services like Scentbird, a subscription brand that offers monthly deliveries of designer scents in eight-millilitre travel sprays (that’s approximately 120 spritzes), are becoming increasingly popular among the #PerfumeTok community. The service provides fragrance lovers with the ability to choose from a wide array of trendy scents, so subscribers can dip their toes into the world of luxury fragrance without any major financial commitment or excess waste.

While relatively simple (but still important) eco swaps, like refillable bottles, have gradually become the norm, fragrance houses — and the perfumers they work with — continue to push forward, enthusiastically doing more and more to give back to the planet. And for an industry that owes Mother Nature so much (what with all the flowers and plants and all), it’s encouraging to see the world of perfume investing in the art of smelling great sans guilt.

From samples to small-batch offerings, there’s no shortage of eco-friendly fragrance options. Here, five of FASHION’s top picks.
