In Defence of the Tube Top

You might call it basic, and you wouldn’t be the first. With its no-frills design and admittedly silly name, the humble tube top has been bad-mouthed for years. But I, for one, have had just about enough. To some, it’s just a stretchy piece of fabric. But to me, it’s a versatile summer staple. And it’s time for the tube top to get the respect it deserves! After all, the strapless shirt has had impressive staying power, especially considering it was invented by mistake.

Though it’s often associated with Y2K, the tube top was actually born in 1971. And like the best things in life (champagne; chocolate chip cookies), it was a happy accident. As the story goes, a manufacturing error resulted in a heap of sleeveless fabric bands, some of which made their way to a New York trading store. There, fashion designer Elie Tahari saw their potential, so he bought the stock and resold them at a profit. And so the tube top became a staple of ‘70s disco style.

During its rise to fame, the garment even found itself in feminist circles. Because the body-hugging tube top has a “naked” appearance, Tahari deemed it to be an emblem of the “modern hippie girl.” But this led the shirt to be unfairly characterized as being poor quality. In turn, Tahari distanced himself from his creation out of concern that it was too “cheap-looking” for his new wealthy clientele, and the shirt’s reputation never really recovered. But I will not stand for this character assassination. Just because a lot of people like something, doesn’t mean it’s no longer worthy. I mean, what other top can double as a skirt and a headband? Kidding. (Sort of.)

Through the ‘90s and early aughts, the midriff-baring piece was once again a fashion staple. It was seen on runways and was worn by decade-defining icons like Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears and Carrie Bradshaw. And as the modern Y2K revival ushers skin-baring styles back to the runway, the tube top has been spotted in recent designer collections, from Blumarine to Balenciaga. But to some of us, it’s never gone out of style.

Sure, the strapless garment has had its share of image problems. As a tight-fighting top that accentuates the breasts and torso, it’s often sexualized. (I mean, the British term for the piece is “boob tube.”) And its design suggests that it defies gravity (it does not).

Photos from past decades see it mostly being worn by thin women, perpetuating the notion that such revealing clothes are not meant for bigger sizes. But to that I say, blame the toxic diet culture of the early 2000s, not the top itself. Today, there’s a growing push to see Y2K styles on diverse body types, and tube tops are no different.

Love it or hate it, the shirt has transcended generations. As for me, I firmly believe you can never go wrong with a tube top. So I will always be here to defend it.

Barbiecore and Western Wear Are a Perfect Match

Buckle up your rhinestone belt, dust off your fringe jacket and slip into your hot pink cowboy boots, because westernwear is getting the Barbie treatment.

We’ve all seen the pictures by now. When filming the upcoming live-action Barbie film, Margot Robbie (who plays the titular doll) was photographed in a hot pink ‘80s-style cowboy outfit, complete with a paisley bandana and metallic star detailing. The look went viral and now we all want to channel cowgirl Barbie this summer.

The vibrant aesthetic takes the character’s iconic hot-pink hyper-femininity and applies it to traditional cowboy get up like fringe, leather belts and flared pants. But don’t be fooled by its name — anyone, masculine or feminine, can participate in the trend. To see it come to life, look no further than the Calgary Stampede. Running until July 17, the festival is like Canada’s very own western wear runway. And this year, elements of Barbiecore could be seen in the crowds. Attendees are sporting sparkly stetsons, brightly coloured cowboy boots, glitter makeup and hot pink-lined bikinis.

The cowgirl Barbie look is gaining attention thanks to the hype surrounding the film (set to be released in 2023). But people have been reimagining traditional cowboy imagery for years. Cowboy aesthetics have been going mainstream for some time now, with country-style boots and hats becoming a staple of TikTok #OOTDs, not just rodeos. Not to mention, Lil Nas X has brought genderfluid cowboy fashion to our feeds since his 2019 hit single Old Town Road. Other stars have put their own stylized spin on the traditional country look in recent years, from Harry Styles to Lizzo to Cardi B.

While we may have come to expect Lil Nas X in a hot pink cowboy costume on the red carpet, this aesthetic is a radical shift from the cowboys of yore. In mainstream media, western styles have historically been dominated by the heterosexual white male cowboy archetype. But as hyperfeminine aesthetics like hot pink and sparkles take over the trend, cowboy fashion is now a tool for experimental personal style.

Western fashion has officially gone alternative (or should we say… y’allternative?), and cowboys and Barbies now live harmoniously together.

6 Chic Fashion Trends to Rock this Summer

With warm weather in full swing, it’s the perfect time to have fun with fashion and embrace new summer trends. Thankfully, Nordstrom is making that even easier for fashion lovers with its annual and much-anticipated Anniversary Sale.

From July 15th to the 31st, shoppers can buy brand new items at limited-time low prices both in-store and online. Featured brands include Rag & Bone, Hugo Boss and Charlotte Tilbury along with a few new additions like Mini Boden and Naked Wardrobe. Items will be available for men, women and kids under every category including beauty (special shout-out to our Estee Lauder and MAC lovers). They even have stylists on the floor available to offer quick and free fashion advice and help you build out a whole new wardrobe.

Along with the sale, Nordstrom will also host an in-store daily happy hour from 2:30-5:00 p.m. from July 14th to the 31st, which will include a menu of drinks and light bites at specialty pricing in their various locations. They’ll also host 18 days of beauty events both in-store and online; on July 16th will be an in-store celebration of all-things beauty featuring special offers, gifts with purchase, samples and makeup tutorials.

Ready to start shopping and elevate your summer wardrobe? We chatted with Stefanie Lowe, an in-house stylist at Nordstrom, for her take on this season’s hottest trends plus easy tips on how to make them your own.

Cut-outs

From tops and dresses to shoes, cut-outs are all the rage this summer. Whether you’d like to rock an open back, an exposed side or a cheekier stomach reveal (show off those abs), you can make this trend your own by looking for cut-out pieces that you feel confident in.

“We’re seeing cut-outs on the back, the side, the neckline, the shoulder, even on shoes and activewear. It’s super fun,” says Lowe. “My tip? Keep your accessories minimal and let the cut-out do the talking. Keep everything super simple, down to your hair and makeup.”

Patterns + Textures

Summer is the perfect time to make bolder fashion choices and this season, it’s all about vivid patterns and textured pieces. Luckily for you, the one-of-a-kind Nordstrom Anniversary Sale features a wide variety of vibrant pieces that you can mix and match into eye-catching looks.

“We’re seeing lots of texture and loud prints shine through; think faux leather or more retro patterns,” says Lowe. “You can dive in loudly with bold matching sets, or you can make a nod to this trend by incorporating single pieces into your look. Either way, being bold is an absolute must. Don’t be afraid to take risks, then you can accept all the compliments.”

So, go for a loudly patterned dress or jumpsuit or a certain texture from head to toe (hello, faux leather matching set), or you can pair a bolder piece with some denim and break it up.

White Shoes

Whether it’s sneakers, booties or a pair of pumps, white shoes are a staple in a summer wardrobe (and beyond if styled correctly). They’re the easiest way to tie together a look and have the power to fully dress it both up or down.

“Nothing screams fresh like a pair of white shoes. My two favourite choices are a white sneaker and a white cowboy boot,” says Lowe. “For an effortless look, wear your white sneakers with your dresses and trousers this summer. For a statement, rock a monochromatic look, pairing your white shoes with an all-white outfit.”

Denim

Skinny jeans are *finally* a thing of the past and now, there’s so much more room to play in the denim category, especially during the summertime. Whether you like a boot cut, flare, straight or a wide leg, these different cuts of denim are so versatile when it comes to styling different looks.

“Updating your denim for the season is the number one way to stay on-trend,” says Lowe. “I love styling straight leg denim with an oversized poplin shirt, either worn open over a tank or with a half tuck.”

Summer Suits

As we make our way back to the office, it’s the perfect time to level up your summer work looks and find the perfect office-friendly pieces that can transition into happy hour without a hitch. The key is to stay light and breezy. For both men and women, find suits and blazers made with lighter materials and colours for both summer and fall.

“I love a matching set. We are seeing a relaxed suit vibe all over street style. Consider a pleated trouser short with a relaxed shirt, blazer or even vest,” says Lowe. “Mix up these statement pieces with sneakers for a more unexpected approach to everyday dressing.”

Accessories Galore

Finally, the key to tying any look together is accessorizing. From sunglasses and jewellery to luxe timepieces and handbags, take advantage of The Anniversary Sale by looking for both summer statement pieces and more timeless accessories that you’ll be able to wear season after season.

“Sunglasses complete a look. What’s trending are geometric shapes—think hexagonal, rectangular or even square,” says Lowe. “Embrace the revival of nostalgic fashion with your accessories as well, and add a straw or trinket bag to your look.”

Violet Chachki is Not Here for Mediocre Drag

To simply call Violet Chachki the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season seven is a severe understatement. Yes, it may be where she got her start back in 2015, but since then, she has outgrown the franchise (sorry, Ru!) and found fame on a global scale. The glamazon is part model, part performer, part artist, part muse and 100 per cent herself at all times, as I discovered when we chatted on the phone. She is not afraid to call it as she sees it, hence her Queen B reputation. But in our conversation, I see the true Violet doesn’t take herself too seriously.

Because of her busy schedule, we weren’t able to Zoom, but if we had, I imagine I would’ve been treated to an outfit of epic proportions. Her combination of old Hollywood glamour and femme fatal fetishism has earned her a spot amongst the fashion glitterati. Besides being a front-row fixture at fashion week, Chachki was the first ever drag queen to front a lingerie campaign in 2017. She gave Marilyn Monroe a run for her money in Prada’s Fall 2018 film. She’s walked countless runways, including Moschino’s and Richard Quinn’s. And she’s one of the select few who have descended the Met Gala steps in full drag. Not only that but she’s also dipped her toe into the beauty, fragrance and music worlds and recently collaborated with Canada’s own Allie-X on a single.

In honour of her “A Lot More Me” tour coming to Canada (tickets for which are now on sale), starting in Montreal on July 22, FASHION chatted with Violet Chachki about her upcoming performances, the newest season of Drag Race, and owning who she really is.

I would be remiss if I first didn’t ask you about RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7, the franchise’s latest season where previous show winners come back to compete for the ultimate crown. As the winner of season seven, did you ever get the call, and did you want to get the call?

For a minute, I wanted to get the call, but my opinion on whether I would actually go back on the show changes weekly. Sometimes I think, “Oh, it’d be so fun,” and other times I’m like, “That gives me so much anxiety and absolutely not” [laughs]. So my thoughts on being in an all-winners season constantly change.

In the online series Fashion Photo RuView, you and Gottmik critique the runway looks from the latest season of Drag Race. Recently, Raja’s (the season three winner and renowned “fashion queen”) fans have come after you for your negative reviews of some of her outfits. What is your take on the situation?

I love Raja! She’s definitely an icon but [this whole situation] is just so funny. I think fans singled her out because she was the one that started the show Fashion Photo RuView in 2014, and then [I came on] critiquing her, but that’s the whole point of the series! Many fans are pretty young and just really attached to these queens. So when someone comes in and critiques them, even if it is their job, people can get upset about it. I mean, I tried to be fair with all of my criticism, and it’d be boring [if I said] everyone was great or bad the whole time. All the queens have their moments, and at the end of the day, it’s just one opinion, and it’s just clothes. Don’t get me wrong, I love fashion and drag, but let’s be real here: we’re just playing dress-up. There are so many more important things going on right now.

So what are you looking for when you toot or boot an outfit?

There’s just so much drag now that it’s become saturated, so it’s getting harder and harder every year [to stand out]. There’s a lot of mediocre and copycat drag out there. So for me, I’m looking for something I haven’t seen before. I want to see who pushes the art form in a new direction.

You had such an impact on the fashion in Drag Race. How do you think drag fashion has changed over the years?

I think many different people have helped shift what drag fashion is and what it could be. Sharon Needles [the winner of season four] really shook up what it could be. And then Raja took the show in a fashion direction, and yeah, I think I helped shift it as well. In those early seasons, everyone was so different, unique and specific to where they came from in the country. But now it feels like all the queens [on the newer seasons] are blending into one another. Everything is so self-referential and has become almost like a parody of itself.

Drag queens have been taking the fashion industry by storm. What do you think has spurred this takeover? Because it feels like they have become fashion’s new muses.

I think drag and fashion have always influenced each other. Fashion is about confidence and creation, and that’s what drag is about too. But I don’t know if I’d call it a takeover. There are designers like Richard Quinn and Jean-Paul Gaultier who have always represented the community, and there are others who never have and never will.

You once told Vogue that you’ve always thought of fashion as a language. Can you expand on that and how it applies to your style?

I think of fashion like armour. I love using clothes to say something without speaking, and I think it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words. You can use clothing to take up space, get attention and even hide. A good example is after I won Drag Race, I was getting so much criticism for things that I’m not: “she’s not an actor,” “she’s not a comedian,” “she’s not as talented as so-and-so.” So when I came back [for the season eight finale] to pass the crown down, I wanted to make a statement saying a big f*ck you to everybody who was so critical of me. I wanted it to be almost scary how regal and royal I looked. I had a prosthetic crown growing out of my head, and I think it worked really well. It was just such a powerful message without saying anything.

You’re pretty famous for your corsets, and now the rest of the world has caught up. What do you think is the eternal appeal of the corset, and what’s the craziest one you’ve ever worn?

Some people think corsets are just about being skinny, but that’s not what draws me to them. I love the extreme silhouette they create, the artistry of how they’re made and all the time that goes into making one. The smallest corset I’ve ever worn was probably the 18- or 19-inch corset I wore on the show. It was for the “Death Becomes Her” runway challenge, so I was really going for it. We had to walk the runway twice, so I went around once and then I had to take a break because it was honestly a health concern.

And on Instagram, you’ve teased a lot of corsetted costumes for your “Violet Chachki Presents A Lot More Me” tour. What can fans expect from the show?

Well, the show quite literally means me taking control over my career. I’ve wanted to do a show like this for so long, and I named it “A Lot More Me” because, after years of being wrapped up in Drag Race and touring with other people, I finally get to do my solo show and do something that is totally me, my vision and my style of drag. And I think people can expect truly the most produced solo touring drag show that’s ever happened. I mean, so much production goes into this show, from the costumes to the music to visuals to the aerial performances. It’s a drag, vaudeville, circus and fashion show all in one. It’s a complete labour of love, and it’s just about me coming into my own, owning my star power and showcasing the kind of drag I love.

So what are you looking for when you toot or boot an outfit? There’s just so much drag now that it’s become saturated, so it’s getting harder and harder every year [to stand out]. There’s a lot of mediocre and copycat drag out there. I’m looking for something unique that I haven’t seen before. I want to see who is pushing the art form in a new direction. It seems like many different people have helped shift what drag fashion is and what it could be over the years. Sharon Needles really shook up what it could be with her unique style. Raja took the show in a different fashion direction, and I helped shift it as well. In the early seasons, everyone was so different and unique to where they came from in the country. But now it feels like all the queens on the newer seasons are blending into one another. It seems like everything has become very self-referential and almost like a parody of itself. Drag queens have been increasingly present in the fashion industry. Do you think that this is due to queer people becoming more accepted in society, or do you think there are other reasons? I think that drag and fashion have always influenced each other. Fashion is about confidence and being creative, and drag queens embody those qualities. However, I don’t know if I would call it a takeover. There have always been designers like Richard Quinn and Jean-Paul Gaultier who have represented the community, and there are others who never have and never will. You once told Vogue that you’ve always considered fashion to be a language. Can you explain what you mean by that and how it applies to your personal style? I think of fashion like armour. It’s a way to express yourself and communicate who you are to the world. I love using clothes as a form of self-expression, and I think it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words. With clothing, you can take up space, get attention, and even hide. A good example is after I won Drag Race, I was getting so much criticism for things that I’m not: “she’s not an actor,” “she’s not a comedian,” “she’s not as talented as so-and-so.” So when I came back [for the season eight finale] to pass the crown down, I wanted to make a statement saying a big f*ck you to everybody who was so critical of me. I wanted it to look like I was in control and unaffected by the negative comments. I had a prosthetic crown growing out of my head, and I think it worked really well.

Hailey Bieber might as well be the face of summer’s minimalist beauty trend. The model and now skincare mogul’s “glazed donut” glow is the season’s most sought-after look. But much like her dewy complexion, Bieber’s glistening talons are hard to miss — and we have celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt to thank.

The Los Angeles-based manicurist (whose clientele includes Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Hudgens, Kendall Jenner, Maude Apatow and Simone Ashley) is responsible for creating what she calls “glazed donut nails” — a nude chromatic combination that resembles the confection it’s named after.

Just because we’re ditching the heavy makeup this summer doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little sparkle, especially when it comes to our nails. So we caught up with Ganzorigt to talk about her favourite trends, creating the perfect nude shade and her predictions for fall.

What’s your favourite nail trend for this summer?

Usually bright colours would be my answer but this time I’d say Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails. It’s really simple and minimalist but catches everyone’s eye from a mile away. (Ganzorigt shared everything she used to create this look on IG, which you can shop in the gallery below.)

What are the most sought after nail looks by your clients?

When summer comes, bright colours are more popular. So recently, I’ve been getting requests for bright neon colours such as orange, yellow, blue and pink.

What shapes and lengths are most on trend right now?

In my opinion, people are going towards a more natural look and most of my clients get the medium length oval shape.

My favourite design right now is, as I mentioned before, Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails. You can create it with any colour and it just makes them all more elegant and pretty.

When you’re working with a client for a photoshoot, how do you coordinate their nails with the rest of their look?

First I look at what they’re wearing and understand what they’re trying to present. Then I talk to the client and we come up with an idea together [and decide] if [they] should do [a] design or just go simple and neutral.

How much of a consideration is skin tone/undertone when you’re selecting a colour for a client?

That’s really important especially when it comes to nude shades. So that’s why I always mix at least two different nude colours depending on my client’s skin tone.

What are some tools that you would recommend for at-home manicures?

The fundamental [part] of [a] good and long lasting manicure is good nail prep. So I’d recommend nail prep tools such as a pusher and nipper. They aren’t hard to find and you can get them from Amazon. And also, always keep your nails moisturized and use cuticle oil, or any beauty oil, every day.

Any predictions around nail trends for fall 2022?

When it comes to nails, it’s really unpredictable nowadays. But usually dark, warm toned colours get more popular in fall. Since chrome nails are so hot this year, I’d say dark chrome nails will be really trendy in fall.

Zola Ganzorigt: One of my favorite trends for summer is the “glazed donut” nails. It’s a nude chromatic combination that resembles the confection it’s named after. I think it’s a great way to add a little sparkle to your nails without being too over the top.

What’s your advice for creating the perfect nude shade?

Zola Ganzorigt: I would say to start with a light base coat and then add a few layers of color until you achieve the desired shade. I also like to add a little bit of shimmer to my nude nails for an extra pop.

What are your predictions for the nail trends we’ll see this fall?

Zola Ganzorigt: I think we’ll see a lot of dark, vampy shades this fall. I also think we’ll see more matte finishes and less shine. What are the most sought-after nail looks by your clients?

Right now, my clients are mainly asking for bright colors, like orange, yellow, blue, and pink. Neon colors are definitely in right now. Shapes and lengths vary, but right now I’d say the most popular shapes are oval and almond, and lengths are either medium or long. I think people are moving towards a more natural look, and most of my clients get the medium length oval shape. My favorite design right now is the glazed donut nails that Hailey Bieber wears. The Funny Girl Drama is the Glee Spin-Off No One Wanted

From 2009 to 2015, Glee brought sharp comedy, messy plot twists and many, many covers to our television screens. The Fox series about the teenage members of the New Directions glee club was as chaotic as it was heartfelt, and at the centre of all the drama (both real and fictitious) was Lea Michele, who played star singer Rachel Berry.

Berry’s ambitious and over-eager personality made her something of an outcast, but her talent was undeniable. So, when news broke that Michele would be usurping the role of Funny Girl’s Fanny Brice on Broadway, gleeks new and old were transported back to the William McKinley High School choir room. It seems we’re living in a real life episode of Glee, and Rachel Berry is still the main character.

Funny Girl opened in 1964 with Barbra Streisand as the lead, but it wasn’t until this year that the show’s Broadway revival would begin with Beanie Feldstein (BooksmartLady Bird) playing Fanny Brice. The decision to cast Feldstein, a plus-size actor, was celebrated as groundbreaking. But her time on Broadway has been cut short.

Following lacklustre reviews of Feldstein’s performance (some argue that fatphobia played a role in this scrunity), the actor posted a cryptic message announcing her departure on July 10. “Once the production decided to take the show in a different direction, I made the extremely difficult decision to step away sooner than anticipated.”

The following day, it was announced that Lea Michele would be taking the part. It’s possibly the most meta casting of the decade — here’s why.

As the self-proclaimed best member of the glee club, Michele’s Rachel Berry had a few defining characteristics: her take-no-prisoners competitiveness, her rigid ambition and her undying obsession with Barbra Streisand’s Fanny Brice. Funny Girl’s “Don’t Rain On My Parade” was Berry’s unofficial anthem and she went on to star in a Broadway revival in the final seasons of the show. Lea Michele, too, has been itching to play Fanny Brice for years. When she posted the casting announcement on July 11, she wrote: “A dream come true is an understatement.”

Glee creator Ryan Murphy wrote Berry with Michele in mind, and throughout the show’s run, she was suspiciously good at playing the high-strung character. With Feldstein’s exit, life continues to imitate art. But it’s not just Michele’s debut in the Broadway show that feels like a Murphy-esque plotline — it’s also the departure of Glee actor Jane Lynch.

During the show’s six-season run, Lynch played Coach Sue Sylvester, a tracksuit-clad villainous gym teacher who would stop at nothing to destroy the musical group. Equal parts pure evil, walking meme and occasional hero, Sylvester embodied the chaos of Glee. Lynch, who plays the role of Fanny Brice’s mother in the Broadway production, will now be leaving the show one day prior to Michele’s arrival. Coincidence? We think not. The real-life situation mimics a scene in Gleeepisode 17 of season five, to be exact — in which Sue walks out during Berry’s opening Funny Girl performance.

In Glee, Berry’s diva tendencies made her unpopular. And in recent years, the curtain has been pulled back on Michele’s similarly unflattering reputation. To recap, the actor faced backlash in 2020 when she tweeted in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, sparking several of her former co-workers to speak out about her cruelness to them.

Notably, her former Glee co-star Samantha Ware, who is Black, tweeted that Michele had made her life a “living hell” on set and accused her of “traumatic microaggressions” that made Ware question a career in Hollywood. It led to a tepid notes app apology from Michele, and since then, she’s kept a relatively low profile. Until now. On July 11, Ware tweeted in response to the casting news, saying in part that “Broadway upholds whiteness.”

Despite her meanness, Glee always sent the message that Lea Michele — err, Rachel Berry — was born for stardom, and that she was going to achieve it no matter what.  And here we are, all these years later. Lea Michele is Rachel Berry-ing. Jane Lynch is pulling an iconic Sue Sylvester stunt. And somehow, it feels like Ryan Murphy is writing the script for the whole situation. As for the viewers, we’re still living for the drama like it’s a Wednesday night in 2009.

Why Are Flat Stomachs Still an “Accessory” on the Runway?

Hemlines are higher, fabrics are sheerer and cut-outs reign supreme — skin is in, and the most recent Haute Couture Week was no exception.

On the surface, the rise of risqué clothing is a celebration of our newfound bodily freedom. But by featuring exclusively waify models in these wares, designers send the message that skin-baring self-expression is only acceptable on thin people. 

Take Schiaparelli. Creative director Daniel Roseberry’s collection was all about playful displays of nudity. Exposed breasts were accentuated with nipple covers, sculptural designs and mesh, while chain materials featured stomach-baring cut-outs that swung as leggy models strutted down the catwalk. Wide-brim hats cast a shadow over some of the models’ faces, making exposed body parts (namely flat stomachs) the focal point.

Cut-outs were also seen at the Jean Paul Gaultier presentation. The collection, designed by Olivier Rousteing, was an ode to slender silhouettes, with upper thighs, pelvic bones and toned torsos peeking through the clothing. While the creative director of Balmain did bring some body diversity to the runway by enlisting curve model Precious Lee, the overtly skin-baring pieces were shown only on thin models.

And then there was Fendi’s couture collection. The Italian fashion house sent a lineup of sheer gowns with exposed breasts, thigh gaps and flat stomachs down the runway in Paris. Vogue said the collection captured an “elegance” reminiscent of the work by late artistic director Karl Lagerfeld. Unironically, Lagerfeld famously defended the fatphobic practice of only hiring thin runway models.

What it all comes down to is this: By glorifying thin figures on the haute couture runways, designers perpetuate the idea only those body types can participate in high fashion. And at this point, using a flat stomach as an “accessory” is just boring.

The revival of Y2K fashion has brought back skin-baring fashion and forced the industry to reckon with its legacy of fatphobia. The early aughts maintained the “heroin-chic” aesthetic of the ‘90s that worshiped an unhealthy standard of thinness. During the original era of micro-mini skirts, low-rise jeans and teeny baby tees, it wasn’t so much the clothes that were “in,” but the bodies those clothes could fit onto. As 2000s styles re-emerge, these fraught ideals are materializing on the catwalk once again.

Brands like Blumarine and Sultry Virgin have dedicated entire collections to skimpy Y2K styles. But their retrospective collections inadvertently glorified 2000s standards of thinness by excluding larger sizes. This troubling trend continues with contemporary collections. Take recent viral runway shows by Mowalola and Thom Browne, which used risqué designs to touch on topics like censorship, sexual oppression and restrictive gender norms. These powerful messages ultimately fell flat because they were not presented on a diverse group of models.

On the surface, the rise of risqué clothing is a celebration of our newfound bodily freedom.But by featuring exclusively waify models in these wares, designers send the message that skin-baring self-expression is only acceptable on thin people.. The main point is that by only using thin models, fashion designers are creating an ideal that only people with those body types can wear high fashion. However, Y2K fashion is coming back and is sending the message that all bodies are good bodies. This new fashion era is something the industry needs to reckon with, as it goes against everything the industry has been previously teaching. As 2000s styles re-emerge, the fraught ideals of the time are materializing on the catwalk once again. Y2K fashion tended to prioritize a flat stomach as the main focal point of an outfit, something that needs to stop.

Brands like Blumarine and Sultry Virgin have dedicated entire collections to skimpy Y2K styles. But their retrospective collections inadvertently glorified 2000s standards of thinness by excluding larger sizes. This troubling trend continues with contemporary collections.
