Sadie Sink is FASHION’s September Cover Star

0

Don’t get Sadie Sink started on High School Musical. “You just say the word and I can sing all the lyrics of ‘I Want It All’ from the third movie,” she laughs, describing her love of the iconic Disney Channel franchise and the characters Ryan and Sharpay Evans, played by Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale. “They are NOT the villains!” she passionately declares, only half joking. (For the uninitiated, she’s referring to the first film, in which the Evans siblings try to prevent Vanessa Hudgens’s Gabriella Montez and Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton from auditioning for the school musical.) “Sharpay put in the work! Where is the respect for seniority? But I could talk about this for hours.”

In fact, we’re only five minutes into our video chat, but here we are, already gossiping, grinning and giggling like two girls at a slumber party. She’s even dressed for one, wearing a relaxed striped shirt with a messy bun and barely-there makeup as she sits cross-legged on a chair in an L.A. hotel room. And maybe it’s her young age of 20, or maybe it’s because I’ve caught Sink in a lull after a whirlwind of press for season four of Stranger Things, but our conversation feels more intimate than most. This, I soon discover, is rare for the usually guarded actor.

Growing up in Brenham, Tex., Sadie Sink and her four siblings — three brothers and one sister — weren’t allowed to watch many movies, but one that they were able to enjoy was High School Musical (hence the obsession). “It really had a huge impact on me and started me and my brother Mitchell on our musical journey,” she shares. Case in point: The Sink siblings would make up their own choreography to various songs from the film and (in her words) force their family to watch them perform it. With two such fervent musical fans in the house, their parents enrolled both Sink and her brother in local singing, acting and dancing classes, which led them to get roles at a regional theatre in Houston. “My mom drove us to all these things — not in the hope of our ever going to Broadway or anything like that but because they were activities we loved doing.”

As luck would have it, that’s exactly what happened next. Sink was playing the titular role in a local production of Annie when she learned that Broadway was looking for its own red-headed protagonist. After submitting an audition tape, Sink was initially cast as an understudy, but a few months later, she became the star. She was 11 years old at the time. By 12, she was starring in The Audience (written by The Crown’s Peter Morgan) alongside Helen Mirren. “That’s when my relationship with acting changed,” notes Sink. “Working with some of the greatest minds in the industry taught me about what acting really is, and that’s when I decided this was what I wanted to do.”

With that in mind, Sadie Sink began a natural transition from stage to screen. After moving to New Jersey with her family, she landed a few guest spots on TV series like The Americans and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But it wasn’t until she auditioned for season two of Stranger Things that her world completely changed. Although the casting directors were initially hesitant about Sink’s “old” age (she was 14 at the time!), she wouldn’t take no for an answer. “I just begged and pleaded with them to give me more material so I could show them something fresh,” she explains, describing how “right” the part of Max felt to her. The producers relented and called her in for a chemistry read with now co-stars Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin. The next day, she found out she’d got the part.

With the fifth and final season of Stranger Things on its way, Sink isn’t sure if she has become more or less like her character, but she admits that they both tend to put up walls. “Max’s walls look very different from mine,” she says. “I don’t think I’m as cold as she is, but I can sometimes be slightly emotionally unavailable.” It then dawns on me that I’ve been seeing a slightly less guarded Sadie Sink on my screen — one who is quick to share stories and laugh at her situation and herself. However, she’s still careful with her words — and who could blame her? After watching the media devour other famous young females — like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and even her co-star Millie Bobby Brown — Sink is smart to be cautious.

Speaking of Swift, Sink’s opportunity to work with the singer-songwriter on All Too Well: The Short Film in 2021 couldn’t have come at a better time. “I’m so grateful that she was able to give me such good advice in terms of navigating the industry as a young woman and about life in general,” Sink says, smiling. What exactly did Swift share? Well, that’s a secret Sink keeps to herself, although it’s clear from her expression that her friendship with Swift is special and full of mutual admiration. (Swift reportedly personally chose Sink for the role.) “As a director, she’s just as amazing as you’d think she would be,” Sink explains enthusiastically. “She is a powerhouse and can do anything she puts her mind to.”

Looking back, Sink is still processing her teen years spent in the spotlight. “It’s such a weird and specific situation that the Strangers Things cast and I are all in because the world knows who our characters are but we’re still trying to figure out who we are as people,” she says thoughtfully. “I think being in the industry accelerates you and you mature faster. But for the most part, it’s just so fun because the cast is all going through it together.”

To get her “typical teen fix,” Sink reveals she’d often condense multiple experiences, such as a high-school party or a late-night diner run, into one weekend and treat them like checking off boxes on a to-do list. But the one that got away? Living her High School Musical fantasy. “I would’ve absolutely loved to have been in a school production with kids my age,” she says wistfully.

Although most people would happily trade homemade costumes for red-carpet couture, Sink admits she feels more comfortable in baggy jeans and a tank top than a bourgeois ball gown. “In a way, the clothing I wear in my personal life feels like a type of armour,” she shares, referring to the powerful suiting and edgy separates she’s been rocking recently. “I feel more like myself when I’m not dressed up.” That said, her love of blazers transcends both celebrity and real-life Sadie. “I will wear them until the day I die,” she laughs.

That’s the thing with Sadie Sink. As much as she is focused on continuing to build her career, with the 2021 horror franchise Fear Street, the final season of Stranger Things and Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming psychological drama The Whale (to be released later this year) and attempting to navigate a complicated relationship with the fame that follows, she’s still just a young woman trying to find herself as she graduates from her teens into her 20s. Whether she’s taking her cues from a grown-up Taylor Swift or the fictional and fabulous Sharpay, or a little bit of both, it’s clear that Sadie Sink will be calling the shots. And that’s exactly how it should be. “Honestly, my life has felt a bit like a coming-of-age movie,” she reveals. We’ll be here, waiting for the sequel.

How Pretty Little Liars Failed Alison

0

Was there ever a teen villain so elusive? “A” mercilessly tormented the main characters of Pretty Little Liars throughout its seven season run. But for many years, clique dictator Alison DiLaurentis (played by Sasha Pieterse) was the true villain of Rosewood High. On July 28, the Pretty Little Liars reboot Original Sin will revive the franchise with a new batch of teen girls caught up in a troubling mystery. We can only hope this series doesn’t make the same mistakes as its predecessor.

Whether it was glorifying teacher-student relationships or mishandling mental health, Pretty Little Liars peddled many questionable narratives (and I say this as a fan). But perhaps its greatest downfall was the way the show’s bad writing and ill-suited costumes ruined its most interesting character, Alison DiLaurentis.

In her heyday, Alison had a quartet of loyal followers who both enabled and fell victim to her cruelty. So when she went missing at the start of the series, her friends were harassed by “A,” who sought vengeance for her crimes.

After two failed spinoffs, HBO’s Original Sin brings the franchise back to life. Based on five girls who are haunted by their mothers’ teenhood mistakes, the show taps into PLL nostalgia by including an anonymous menace who goes by “A.” But this time around, the five main characters are loveable outcasts, not complicit popular girls. This is a drastic change from the 2010 series.

Alison DiLaurentis is arguably the most iconic teen tyrant of all time. If put in a room with other terrifying high schoolers like Mean Girls’ Regina George and Euphoria’s Maddy Perez, season one Alison would be the one to drive all others to tears. At 15 years old (Pieterse was only 13), Alison was not just a schoolyard bully, she was an evil maniacal legend who blackmailed half of Rosewood. She was always the centre of attention, and her outfits reflected this.

In the early seasons, Alison had a distinct trendy style with bright colours, feminine silhouettes and statement accessories. Even when she was manipulating her friends, she exuded charm and charisma.

she was walking right out of middle school recess and onto to the PLL set to eat up every adult on that show pic.twitter.com/PmiQdjzKeO

— ceo of kory (@korysverse) April 21, 2022

But part-way through the series, Alison began to change — and not in a good way. After returning to Rosewood, she embarked on an unconvincing character arc. She began wearing muted colours, baggier shapes and more matronly outfits comprising blazers, conservative blouses, oversized cardigans and out-of-place cartoonish designs (like this puppy dog sweater, for some reason).

This stark change in her fashion sense suspiciously fell in line with Sasha Pieterse’s weight gain as a result of her condition, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Looking back, it seems the costume department had trouble (or didn’t put effort into) dressing someone who wasn’t a size two.

Alongside her bland wardrobe, Alison went through a personality transplant. For starters, she lost power over her friend group. Though still selfish and untrustworthy, she lacked the magnetic spark that made her an intriguing antagonist. In the early seasons, Alison was unapologetic about who she was. But as the series progressed, she didn’t seem to stand for anything, not even her villainy.

From making fatsuits a punchline to constantly writing plus-size characters as undesirable, Hollywood is rampant with fatphobia. And Pretty Little Liars is an unfortunate example. By taking away her sense of style as her body changed, the show perpetuated the harmful idea that to be a fashionable “it” girl, you have to be thin.

Pretty Little Liars had a tendency to trivialize serious topics. From making binge-eating a running gag among characters to including flippant comments about starvation, the show missed out on opportunities to meaningfully engage with the complexities of body image — and such was the case with Alison DiLaurentis. While we can’t rewrite the franchise’s history, we can improve its legacy.

Original Sin is already being praised for putting a modern twist on the irresistible mystique of the original show. It reportedly replaces Pretty Little Liars’ campier aspects with slasher tropes and a more diverse friend group.

As for Alison DiLaurentis? They don’t make mean girls like her anymore — and maybe that’s a good thing. Despite her botched redemption and her unfair loss of style agency, to me, she will forever be the most cunning queen bee on TV. And for that, I respect her.

Bleached Brows and the Allure of Anti-Beauty

0

You know what we’re letting go of this year? Eyebrows, apparently.

No, we’re not shaving them off, but with some bleach and even more guts you can get the space alien meets Bella Hadid face that has taken over TikTok. Not convinced? Let me explain.

Thanks to social media, the ultra-minimalist DIY is becoming as common as eyeliner. And even though bleached eyebrows have long been used to make a statement on runways and red carpets, the look isn’t new.

In fact, during the Elizabethan era, eyebrows were regularly bleached or plucked to achieve a bare forehead, per the period’s beauty standards. And in the ‘90s, blonde brows gained major prominence on the faces of Linda Evangelista, Madonna and Kate Moss. During this time, New York City “club kids” (aka pre-internet influencers) also endorsed the style with their extreme after-hours looks.

While the trend continued into the early aughts thanks to fashion “It” girls like Chloë Sevigny and Gwen Stefani, the 2010s saw a strong pivot away from minimalist foreheads. The decade brought about an eyebrow growth spurt, welcoming bushy, fuzzy arches back en vogue.

But in recent years, lightened brows have become a rebellious pandemic trend. Case in point: it was by far the most popular beauty choice at the 2022 Met Gala, and the look has recently been seen on celebs like Amelia Gray, Bella Hadid and Lady Gaga.

♬ magnolia – hearts2tyler 💫

The difference this time is that bleached eyebrows are no longer only sported by the Madonnas and models of the world. In the age of TikTok self-expression, a look that was once synonymous with high fashion is being democratized. And it’s not hard to see why.

Eyebrows have long been viewed as one of the most important facial features, and we spend a lot of money trying to perfect them, from cosmetic procedures like micro-blading to brow styling products. And as a result, we’ve probably all been burned by brow experimentation mishaps. Therein lies the beauty of the bleaching trend: no eyebrows, no problem. But besides that, a brow-less face is undoubtedly magnetic.

BLEACHED BROWS OR GO TF HOME pic.twitter.com/qVXRsyyIRn

— chi (@woahhsue) July 24, 2022

Elongated foreheads create a bigger canvas for face art. Depending on how you style them, light brows can give an ethereal, soft aesthetic, or allow for more elaborate eye makeup.

The look is the welcome antithesis of TikTok’s viral “clean girl” aesthetic, which places no-makeup makeup and “natural” perfection as the ultimate beauty standard. A cousin to the messy Euphoria glitter-infused maquillage, the no-brow trend is perfect for the grungy maximalist.

Plus, with a look you can create at home, lightened eyebrows tap into the DIY culture that has taken over in recent years. But if you’re not ready to commit to bleach, applying concealer and purple corrector will give your arches a temporary taste of the coveted style.

Say it with me: dyeing your brows is arts and crafts! It’s no coincidence that the trend is returning as unconventional and “weird” fashion becomes more popular. With their extraterrestrial allure, bleached brows are not supposed to look conventionally attractive, per se. As the ultimate anti-beauty beauty trend, *anyone* can pull off the look.

The singer was seen leaving the Costes Hotel in a stylish outfit that would’ve been perfect for any occasion, with her hair pulled back into an elegant knot. She opted for a sheer pussy-bow blouse with plenty of ruffles and a pair of low-rise flared jeans (yes, you heard that right) that hugged her figure. A brown Saint Laurent shoulder bag and round Chloé sunglasses finished the look.

Flower power

Leaving Hôtel de Crillon, JLo greeted her fans in a floral Gucci silk fil coupé gown. The singer, actress and dancer accessorized with some statement jewellery and a gilded clutch.

Barbie dream girl

JLo hopped on the Barbiecore trend with a fuchsia strappy midi dress by Reformation, going full pink with a matching Valentino top handle bag. PVC platforms by Andrea Wazen elongated her legs, while chunky gold jewellery brought the look to a new height.

Why Sunburn Blush Should Be Your Summer Go-to

0

Everyone wants to look like a sun-kissed glazed donut these days (thank you, Hailey Bieber!), and it’s not hard to see why. Summer has always meant dewy skin and barely-there makeup. But the 2022 edition of the perennial trend has seen an old beauty technique popularized via TikTok: sunburn blush.

The best part is that you don’t actually have to get a sunburn to achieve the look (so don’t ditch your SPF and brimmed hats just yet). By applying a heavy dose of blush in a “W” shape over the cheeks, nose and temples, the skin looks instantly revitalized. It allows you to recreate the ultimate summer glow, as though you’ve spent the day out in the sun and just rolled up to your evening plans looking perfectly flushed.

@lexusmperezz Why is blush the best makeup product ever🥰😭🥹💖 #sunburntblush #liquidblush #makeuptip #blushhack ♬ Hot N Cold – Sped up songs ⚡️

To get the look, you’ll need to find the shade and finish that suits your skin. From creams to powders, we’ve rounded up our top picks in the gallery below to help you perfect the sunburn blush look this summer.

Keke Palmer is a Fashion Chameleon

Keke Palmer is having a blockbuster summer. While promoting her new film Nope, the extraterrestrial horror from Us and Get Out director Jordan Peele (which topped the box office for its opening weekend), the self-proclaimed Millennial Diva has reminded us all that she is nothing if not versatile.

Whether she’s channeling the ‘70s in the pages of British Vogue or the ‘80s/’90s on the cover of Glamour, Keke Palmer is not afraid to experiment with her style. Y2K? She nailed the period’s futurism at the Nope premiere. McBling? Let us not forget the silver chainmail crop top and low-slung mini skirt that she wore to the 2016 AMAs, made even more bling-y with a pink fur coat. Old Hollywood glamour? Not only did she absolutely kill it as co-host of the 2021 Met Gala, Palmer’s glitzy Sergio Hudson gown brought all the drama.

And we can’t even fault the Nickelodeon Queen turned A-list actor’s earliest red carpet choices. Her monochromatic brown outfit for the 2005 Family Television Awards could honestly still work today (albeit with some minor alterations).

At just 28 years old, the former True Jackson, VP actor has been working in the industry for two decades. And in that time, she’s not only grown her extensive resume but also served many fabulous fashion moments, which we revisit in the gallery below.

What *Not* to Wear to a Wedding

0

Wedding season is upon us, and I fear Kendall Jenner must be stopped.

The supermodel (and her family) have a tendency of turning heads with their over-the-top wedding guest fashion. Lest we forget influencer Lauren Perez’s nuptials last summer, where Jenner wore a cut-out dress to end all cut-out dresses. The stomach-baring Mônot gown went viral for being spotlight-stealing and “blatantly disrespectful.” This week, she made headlines once again as the “best-dressed” guest when attending a ceremony in Hawaii.

It seems that with every marriage celebration she attends, Jenner becomes the main attraction. It’s like how that old saying doesn’t go: every bride needs something borrowed, something blue and… someone outshining her, I guess.

In Jenner’s defence, today’s weddings are more unconventional than ever. From cheesy Vegas elopements coming back en vogue to Catholic cosplaying somehow being a thing, traditional rituals are being traded in for unusual ceremonies and dress codes. As a result, the expectations of what to wear can seem a little unclear. But committing a fashion faux pas is not only a bad look, it could get you axed from future wedding guest lists.

Celebrity or not, we all suffer from main character syndrome sometimes. But don’t fret, we’ve compiled some handy guidelines to keep you out of trouble when dressing for the occasion. Read on for what not to wear to a wedding.

Avoid white at all costs

We’ve all been there. You’re invited to a summer wedding and there’s an unforeseen emergency: you look really good in white. When Kelly Kapoor pulled this stunt in an episode of The Office, it was objectively iconic. But that logic only really works for Mindy Kaling’s fictional brand of chaos. At a real-life wedding? Not so cute. To achieve the best guest etiquette, steer clear of the bridal hue. That means no cream, ivory or any other kind of off-white loophole that you think is clever enough to pass as acceptable. Just don’t do it.

Finding guest to wedding dresses is so stressful…. Also, why is every dress I want to buy white? Should I do it? Am I Kelly Kapoor? pic.twitter.com/kHliJ1G2tG

— katie mariquit (@kmariquit) June 15, 2021

Don’t strive to be the hottest person in the room

This is the one occasion in which I will fully condone this advice. Normally, I would be saying the opposite. Shopping for produce in a tube top and Miu Miu micro-mini skirt? As you should. Sporting elaborate Euphoria-inspired makeup to a Monday morning meeting? A very good choice indeed. But please, do not bring this energy to a wedding that is not your own. Let Kylie Jenner be a lesson to us all. After wearing a gold frock to the nuptials of Hailey and Justin Bieber in 2019, the influencer’s look has gone down in the pop culture history books (and not in a good way).

Remember: wedding guest fashion is not Met Gala fashion, and the event is not about you. Now is the time to reel it in and allow the couple of the day to shine. That means no sequins, no sparkles, no tiara and nothing that even resembles a Cinderella ball gown. Pack it up, princess!

this is the dress that made Kylie Jenner outshine Hailey Bieber on her wedding day. pic.twitter.com/MLgNZFtjzf

— Royal’Tee Shongwe (@AdvKindness) August 1, 2021

If you wear flip-flops, expect flip-flop slander

I get it: heels can be a pain, especially for outdoor weddings. But the married couple-to-be has likely spent lots of time and money trying to make their ceremony look perfect. The least they can ask for is some dress code-appropriate footwear. If you’re worried about your feet being in misery, opt for a nice pair of sandals or flats. But wearing flip-flops to celebrate the most important day of someone’s life? In this economy? Unless specifically authorized by a bride or groom themselves, steer clear.

Too much skin is probably unwelcome

Generally speaking, I support all risqué fashion moments. I mean, low-waisted bottoms are my personal hero of 2022. But revealing outfits are not always appreciated at wedding ceremonies. Before slipping on your stomach-baring ensemble à la Kendall Jenner, read the room. In other words, pay attention to the location and dress code. As a general rule of thumb, cut-outs, sheer fabrics and super-short hemlines are not the right choices.

As a guest, there are so many creative ways to ruin a wedding. But wearing an outfit that usurps all the attention? That’s just boring. So please, don’t be that person.

Selena Gomez’s Best Fashion Moments Through the Years

0

Thirty, flirty *and* thriving? Jenna Rink from 13 Going on 30 may have been on to something, and if you need proof, look no further than Selena Gomez.

Those of us who grew up watching the “Lose You to Love Me” singer make YouTube videos with Demi Lovato, date a Jonas Brother (her appearance in the “Burnin’ Up” music video was a zillennial cultural touchpoint) and cast spells on Wizards of Waverly Place can attest to her glow up. From Barney & Friends to Disney Channel royalty to pop princess to beauty mogul, she’s done it all!

But her most admirable trait? Selena Gomez knows who she is, and this is perhaps best seen in her sense of style. Even as she’s changed careers, Gomez’s red carpet fashion has stayed more or less the same — that is, feminine glamour with a touch of edginess. And we say, if it’s not broken, why fix it?

So, in honour of her 30th birthday, we look back on the best Selena Gomez style moments, from 2007 through to today.
