Why Do Actresses of Colour Get Bullied for Being Cast in “White” Roles?

0

Another day, another round of racist trolls taking over the internet. And this time, it’s all because of an animated Disney princess. Earlier this week, social media went into a tizzy when unsubstantiated rumours swirled that Mean Girls actress Avantika Vandanapu was doing screen tests for a live-action Tangled movie, based on the story of Rapunzel. The internet immediately did what it does best: Make thirsty fancams, with several TikTok users casting their dream Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Just as swift? Backlash to Vandanapu’s rumoured casting.

@editsfxi petition for avantika and milo to be our rapunzel and flynn 🫡 #avantika #milomanheim #tangled #rapunzel #flynnrider #edit #disney #fyp ♬ original sound – lola

The same aforementioned fancams turned into something more akin to hate-cams, as users detailed the reasons they feel Avantika Vandanapu shouldn’t be the next Rapunzel. And it’s not because she doesn’t have the acting chops or a face card that never declines (because, let’s be real, she has both), but purely due to the fact that Vandanapu is South Asian, and Rapunzel — whom we’ll remind you is an *entirely fictional, animated character* — is meant to be played by a white, blonde actress. Excuse us while we roll our eyes.

This kind of backlash isn’t new

Vandanapu is far from the first POC actor to face reactions like this to casting news. In July 2021, Canadian Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, was the target of negativity when she shared her dream of playing the iconic character in an interview with CBS News. “I think Rapunzel should be a South Asian girl,” Ramakrishnan told the pub. “Because hear me out, no one knows what it feels like to be trapped in your room, not able to go out because your mother is telling you no without giving you an actual proper reason like brown girls do.”

Despite the fact that casting a South Asian actress to play a character like Rapunzel would, in fact, be a stroke of genius (the luscious tresses alone are reason enough!), many people seem to take issue with it. In response to online commentary around Avantika Vandanapu, Ramakrishnan shared her annoyance with the trolls on social media, tweeting: “And to the racists, y’all still need a hobby fr.”

and they finally woke up to realize it was all just rumours and the sources never existed. good job! and to the racists, y’all still need a hobby fr🤡

— Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (@ramakrishnannn) April 9, 2024

Before Ramakrishnan and Vandanapu, Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran also faced racist criticism when she was cast as Rose Tico in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Tran was the first Asian-American to land a lead role in the sci-fi franchise, something people online seemed to take issue with. The racist and sexist vitriol was so bad that Tran removed herself from social media, went to therapy and took a step back from her burgeoning career.

“I left. I said no to a lot of things,” Tran told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. “It felt like I was just hearing the voice of my agents and my publicity team and all of these people telling me what to say and what to do and how to feel. And I realized, I didn’t know how I felt anymore. And I didn’t remember why I was in this in the first place.”

Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney’s live-action THE LITTLE MERMAID. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2022 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Then there’s Halle Bailey, who was met with hate when she was cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. From the moment her role was announced in July 2019, the internet had thoughts about a Black mermaid-princess, and the hashtag #NotMyAriel was born. When the film was released in May 2023, trolls took to the internet in droves to review-bomb the movie, flooding review sites with negativity to skew the average rating.

…It also creeps up across industries

This hate isn’t exclusive to the big screen. In early April, British actress Francesca Amewudah-Rivers faced an onslaught of racism when it was announced she’ll star opposite Tom Holland in the West End adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The newcomer, who’s making her stage debut as one half of the star-crossed lovers, is a Black woman. So, you get the theme. In a statement to X (formerly Twitter), the production company admonished the racism, stating: “Following the announcement of our Romeo & Juliet cast, there has been a barrage of deplorable racial abuse online directed towards a member of our company. This must stop. We are working with a remarkable group of artists. We insist that they are free to create work without facing online harassment.” (Interestingly, Amewudah-River’s co-star Holland has yet to speak out against the racism).

Representation matters

At the core of these racist reactions is the notion that women of colour aren’t “allowed” to play certain roles because of their skin colour. And that’s simply BS, especially considering that excluding POC actresses from these roles (and many other kinds) has historically been the status quo.

Over the last decade we’ve seen a shift, with the number of lead actresses of colour in feature films steadily growing, which makes any criticism of their incremental wins feel like a knee-jerk response to a shifting norm that no longer centres whiteness. (It should be noted that in 2023, there was a downturn in this representation, according to the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report, with only 14 women of colour leading the top 100 box office movies of the year, down from 18 in 2022.)

The truth is that having actresses of colour cast as traditionally white characters is important. For many young people of colour, seeing folks that look like them portraying the iconic characters they grew up loving reinforces the notion that they belong — both on screen and in society.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Halle Bailey (@hallebailey)

As Bailey told Variety in August 2022, “I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way. There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be.”

Not to mention, having actresses of colour in these roles adds layers of nuance and complexity that we might not get if we strictly stuck to the original source material. Take, for instance, Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty book series, which was adapted for TV in 2022. While Han’s heroine Belly Conklin is originally a white teen in the books, she’s played by actress Lola Tung in the show. Casting a woman of Chinese and Swedish descent doesn’t change the specifics of the plot: There’s still a love story, a steamy romantic triangle and lots of growth to be had, but now viewers are also able to understand the dynamics of growing up as a mixed kid between two cultures, like Belly does. This doesn’t take away from the appeal of the character; it adds to it.

It also works at the box office

The fact remains that not only can actresses of colour play these characters with wit, charm, grace and whatever else may be required to bring their characters to life, but they can also be successful while doing it. Despite the racism Bailey faced as Ariel, and the review-bomb attacks lobbed at it, The Little Mermaid was a record-breaking success. When the movie was released to Disney+ for streaming in September 2023, it quickly became one of the most viewed Disney movie premieres ever.

And even though the reductive pushback is disheartening, these actresses aren’t going to fade into the background. After taking a break from the industry, Tran returned with a role in Raya and the Last Dragon. Bailey recently stared in The Colour Purple. Amewudah-Rivers’s Romeo & Juliet sold out its West End run in two hours, and will reportedly move to Broadway in August. As for Vandanapu and Ramakrishnan? They’re just going to keep achieving their dreams. Ramakrishnan put it simply in her tweet: “[Rapunzel’s] still my dream role, been saying that since 2021. No one’s gonna stop me from literally just TRYING to achieve my dreams.”

also lol she’s still my dream role, been saying that since 2021. no one’s gonna stop me from literally just TRYING to achieve my dreams. def not racists who are internet historians hahahaha

— Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (@ramakrishnannn) April 9, 2024

We can get on board with that.

“Delivery Braids” Are an Act of Self-Care

0

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

Model, amateur home chef and expectant mother Nara Smith recently ditched her signature bob haircut and debuted long, knotless box braids in a video asking followers to share baby name suggestions. While it’s not uncommon for women to change their look now and then, many Instagram and X users had suspicions about this particular aesthetic shift. After her husband Lucky Blue Smith’s sister commented “When the braids come out, I know it’s almost time!!” she seemingly confirmed what others suspected: The soon-to-be mother of three is super close to her due date.

Women are no strangers to pragmatic styling (see: the going out top or the subway shirt), but end-of-term pregnancy calls for even more meticulous planning and coordination. On top of packing a hospital bag and prepping the nursery, expectant mothers with textured hair have an extra task to complete before they welcome their baby: having their “delivery braids” installed.

“I just don’t want to be dealing with washing my hair or combing it out or doing anything,” Nara explains in a TikTok documenting her transition from blunt bob to long braids. “So I always get braids or a different protective style before I go into labour.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tina Knowles (@mstinaknowles)

“Delivery braids,” also know as “pregnancy braids,” “labour braids,” and “maternity braids,” are a hairstyles that many Black expectant moms opt for in preparation for giving birth. Along with Smith, celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Serena Williams and Halsey have all been pictured braided up at the end of their third trimesters.

“Often, pregnant clients will say ‘I need my hair braided because I won’t have time to style it when the baby comes,’” says Stephon John, a Toronto-based braid artist with over 20 years of experience. “A lot of people tend to get protective styles a few weeks before going into labour.”

Black women know that tending to natural hair is a labour of love, but this often requires more time and energy than a new mom can give. So, rather than worrying about refreshing a wash-and-go or sweating out a silk press, pregnant gals often opt for lower-maintenance delivery styles to free up time for other things as their routine changes. While there is no technical difference between pregnant and non-pregnant clients’ braids, this style has been playfully dubbed “delivery braids” by those online as it’s often a visual clue that a woman’s due date is rapidly approaching.

In addition to box braids, John’s pregnant clients ask for other protective styles like cornrows and boxer braids, all of which she recommends leaving in for no more than eight weeks to prevent unnecessary tension on the scalp.

As both timesavers and culturally significant beauty practices, these braided styles serve multiple functions for expectant mothers. An article by Terri Huggins refers to the braiding process as both a “calming” and “nesting” ritual in Black women’s pregnancies that helps prepare them for the lovely chaos that new babies bring. For many women, the demands of motherhood mean hair care simply can’t be a priority.

@naraazizasmith Final stretch 🥹 Comment your suggestions! 🫶🏽 #coupletok #pregnancy #babynames #marriage #fitcheck #fypシ #outfitideas ♬ End of Beginning – Djo

“Motherhood means a lot of time focusing on your newborn, so women have less time to take care of themselves the way they used to,” John says. “It’s self-care since these protective hairstyles limit how many things they have to do for themselves during such a busy time.”

Even though new moms might have less time for their beautification rituals, it would do them a disservice to deny the role that appearance plays in self-esteem, especially when dealing with the fluctuating hormones that are part of pregnancy. With so many unknowns facing women entering their fourth trimesters — the three-month period after delivery when mothers balance changes to their bodies and hormones with the demands of an infant — it’s important to prioritize self-care. Protective styles allow women to feel like themselves during the new experience of motherhood since nearly no effort is required to keep braids looking and feeling fresh.

“Those first pics with your newborn baby are memories you’ll treasure forever,” writes Kristen Bingle on the importance of delivery braids. “And if your hair is looking stylish in a stunning protective style, you’ll love the pics even more.”

The process of getting one’s hair braided also provides a connection to community and cultural practices that can be meaningfully grounding as you bring in the next generation. Many Black women can recall sitting in a braiding chair as children, and as adults, allowing someone else to take care of them. Feeling the cool metal of the tail comb on your scalp, smelling the Blue Magic grease and hearing the TV blare your third movie of the day are all memories associated with this nearly day-long beauty practice. This process is so important that during COVID it wasn’t uncommon to learn the skill to support family members when restrictions prevented Black women from reaching their stylists.

When women prepare to become the primary caregiver for a new life, they should be offered endless care and support by those around them. Through delivery braids, Black women can feel cared for by their communities, and assured that they are not alone in their motherhood journey. And they can look really cute in their baby’s first photos.

Zendaya Is Serving Tenniscore Chic On the Challengers Red Carpet

0

If there’s one thing Zendaya is superb at, it’s setting trends. When it comes to turning out certified *looks* on the red carpet, the actor and her longtime stylist (and former FASHION cover star) Law Roach never miss. There are a few reasons for this: Roach’s styling is impeccable, the pair have access to a deep catalogue of designers’ collections and archives, plus Zendaya could wear an actual paper bag and make it look high fashion. But it’s also thanks in large part to their love for method dressing.

We saw it on the Dune: Part Two press tour earlier this year, with the Emmy-winner making Sandworm chic a thing, and now she’s doing the same with her latest film. And this time, she’s bringing tenniscore back. Promoting her upcoming film Challengers in Europe, Zendaya and Roach have taken tennis from the courts to the red carpet, drawing on their love for archival pieces in both literal and thematic ways to channel the film’s characters and story.

ICYMI, the film — set to be released in theatres on April 26 — follows Zendaya’s character Tashi, a Serena Williams-esque professional tennis player who, after an injury, switches to coaching. Joining her on her journey are love interests, friends and professional rivals Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and Art (Mike Faist), both vying for Tashi’s affection in a sweaty, erotic and grunt-filled story. Excuse me while I fan myself. In a word, it’s going to be HOT — let’s just say there are murmurings of a ménage à trois in the film. And so far, Zendaya’s Challengers red carpet looks are equally spicy.

Kicking off the press tour overseas in Australia on March 26, Zendaya set the tone by walking the red carpet in a custom Loewe gown with a tennis player motif.

Photography by Getty Images

The next day, she gave us a contemporary take on tennis whites, donning a custom tank top and sheer skirt with briefs by Lacoste, a brand founded by tennis legend René Lacoste.

What makes Z’s looks unique is the fact that she’s not just throwing on a stretchy tennis dress and calling it a day (although she would completely rock that look), but rather leaning into the vintage aesthetic of the sport, presenting elevated but familiar silhouettes with a level of glamour we might not typically see from athleisure trends.

On April 6, Zendaya kicked off her Paris photo call for the film in a checker-printed coat from Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2013 collection. As Glamour noted, the apple green colour of the coat isn’t a coincidence, as Z and Roach have been using this green hue as a nod to tennis throughout the run so far, like with the aforementioned Loewe tennis court gown. Paired with a white headband, white pumps and a retro up-do, the cheeky look was a clear nod to 1960s sophistication, merging the sport and high fashion seamlessly.

Days later at the Rome premiere of the film, Zendaya once again married tennis with glamour, rocking a silver sleeveless Loewe dress with a pleated skirt whose silhouette was reminiscent of vintage tennis whites. And the pièce de résistance? Tennis ball heels. C’est chic as heck!

Photography by Getty Images

And she’s not the only one serving tenniscore looks. While Zendaya may be elevating the tennis core trend to red carpet heights, designers have been leaning into it, along with the resurgence of the preppy trend, for the past several years.

This is in large part due to the fact that the sport of tennis, which has long been a symbol of luxury, has become more popular. In January 2023, Netflix released the documentary series Break Point, which gave viewers a BTS look at top tennis players and tournaments, introducing a whole new audience to the iconic sport. Additionally, the pandemic forcing people to come up with new ways to exercise outdoors prompted a large spike in people taking up tennis.

Coupled with the enduring ubiquity of quiet luxury and a desire for classic pieces that will stand the test of time, it should come as no surprise that #tenniscore is taking off. And the runways have been taking note in recent years. Miu Miu’s Fall 2022 collection had an athletic aesthetic, featuring white pleated miniskirts and athletic arm bands. (Later that year, the brand also launched Miu Miu Tennis Club, a tennis-themed event in Saint-Tropez.) Similarly, Lacoste’s Spring 2022 show debuted jersey knits, polos and visors, and brands like Sporty & Rich have consistently paid homage to the sport with tennis dresses and skirts in their collections — actual racquet skills not required.

With Zendaya giving tenniscore her signature high fashion touch on the Challengers red carpet, we’re betting this trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So, tennis anyone?

Luckily you don’t need your own Law Roach in order to try the tenniscore trend. Check out our top tennis-inspired shopping picks below.

Using Upcycled Ingredients Is the Biggest Sustainability Trend in Beauty

0

Waste is an inevitable part of the farming industry. Crops are discarded daily for a plethora of reasons, including the weather, market prices and — believe it or not — aesthetics. In fact, an estimated 40 per cent of total food waste is attributed to grocery stores’ strict cosmetic standards. In other words, wonky-looking and misshapen (but perfectly-good-to-eat) fruits and vegetables are turned away because of their appearance. Talk about judging a book by its cover. As a result, sustainably minded brands are on a mission to give produce and plants that have been discarded — for whatever reason — a second life by using upcycled ingredients in their formulations.

Le Prunier Plum Beauty Oil

Plums are at the heart of California-based brand Le Prunier, thanks to the fruit’s multitude of health benefits. The company’s hero product, Plum Beauty Oil, is formulated using 100 per cent upcycled plum kernels, a waste by-product from the fourth-generation family farm that produces the brand’s ingredients.

Body Proud Bright Boost Body Moisturiser

By using upcycled grapefruit peels that have been discarded by the juice industry in its Bright Boost Body Moisturiser, “Body Proud not only reduces waste but also contributes to a greener, more circular economy,” says Maria Sarris, the brand’s NPD manager.

Nina Ricci Nina Le Parfum

“As a perfumer, I want to be eco-responsible,” says Olivier Cresp, the nose behind the most recent addition to the Nina Ricci scent family. “I like to use all parts of an ingredient, to avoid waste.” Nina uses entire upcycled lemons (including the zest, juice and skin) that have been rejected by fruit markets. “The peel actually contains a higher concentration of aromatic molecules, including the characteristic citrusy scent,” says Cresp.

Sangre de Fruta Garden of Earthly Delights Botanical Conditioner

The cedar oil found in Sangre de Fruta’s Garden of Earthly Delights range is sourced from offcuts from Canadian-grown cedar boughs, twigs and leaves that would otherwise have gone to waste. The beloved scent can be shopped in the brand’s cult-favourite shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion and hand soap.

Sana Jardin Paris Sandalwood Temple Eau de Parfum

In rural Morocco, where Sana Jardin Paris’s floral ingredients are harvested, over 900 tonnes of orange-blossom by-product normally end up in landfills. But through the brand’s Beyond Sustainability circular business model, local female harvesters learn how to upcycle the botanical waste from perfume production and use it to create candles and flower water that they can sell on the side, keeping 100 per cent of the profits for themselves.

Moroccanoil Frizz Shield Spray

This frizz-fighting must-have uses upcycled jackfruit extract alongside its hero ingredient, argan oil, to prevent frizz and protect against damage.

Ellis Brooklyn West Eau de Parfum

Fragrance brand Ellis Brooklyn uses upcycled ingredients (like oranges that were previously juiced and leftover cedarwood shavings from lumber and construction projects), and extracts oils that are then used in fragrance formulations.

A Jewellery Expert’s Guide to Consignment Shopping

0

Have a taste for the sparkly stuff but looking for sustainable (and budget-friendly) ways to satisfy your jewellery habit? Consignment shopping might be right for you. Here, jewellery expert Megan Kirkwood shares tips for shopping consignment jewellery.

Q: I’ve seen some great jewellery at consignment shops. Is it safe to buy?

A: With a little smart shopping, you’ll find that second-hand jewellery is absolutely safe to buy. Consignment retailers are not only a great place to potentially find the best price for a piece you’ve had your eye on but also one of the most environmentally conscious ways to acquire new jewels. In fact, jewellery is one of the most sustainable things you can buy because it can always be recycled and upcycled.

Not to be overlooked, the second-hand market can be a fun way to shop for jewellery, which can otherwise be an intimidating experience. Whether you’re browsing local shops, such as Retyche in Montreal, I Miss You Vintage in Toronto and So Over It Luxury Consignment in Winnipeg, online spots including 1stDibs and Vestiaire Collective or even independent sellers on Instagram, there are countless opportunities to discover unique and hard-to-find pieces. For example, you might be more likely to come across rare gemstones, such as demantoid garnets, kunzite and coral, or impeccably made designer pieces that are no longer available in current collections. Signed pieces are great investments for your collection as they are likely to retain their value or even appreciate over time.

If there’s something special you are after, do some browsing to get a good idea of the going price for similar items — both new and resale. After all, the best shopping luck tends to strike when a little preparation meets opportunity; you won’t have to hesitate when you finally find a great deal on your dream piece. If you fall in love with something on the spot but aren’t sure if the price is right, keep this rule of thumb in mind: 14-karat gold is a good jewellery standard, while the best-quality gems are usually reserved for platinum or 18-karat gold and lower-quality and highly treated stones are usually set in 9- or 10-karat gold. Prefer to avoid the guesswork? Take advantage of retailers such as The RealReal, which supply gemologist appraisals with every item, including details about the quality, composition and overall value of your new bauble.

Not sure if that chic gold signet ring is actually vintage? Remember that second-hand jewellery is generally labelled “estate” until it’s anywhere from 20 to 50 years old, at which point it’s usually considered vintage. Antique pieces are 100 years old or more, and the term “retro” is often saved for designs influenced by the scarcity of materials during World War II. Retro items are also considered vintage.

Lastly, don’t take the condition of any item for granted, particularly when you’re shopping online. Examine photos closely (and ask for more if necessary) to check for worn plating — especially on white-gold pieces, because they are often plated with rhodium, which is shinier — and scratches and chips on both the gemstones and the setting. For bigger-ticket items, visit a jeweller post-purchase to ensure that the settings are secure so you won’t run the risk of losing any gems with regular wear. You might also want to consider having an appraisal done by a professional gemologist (if one wasn’t already provided) for insurance purposes and in case you decide to sell (and recycle) your new treasure down the road.

Flat Sandals Are the Quintessential Summer Shoe

0

Summer should be spent doing exactly two things: showing off your toes and feeling generally fabulous. Flat sandals are a quick and easy way to achieve both.

Eliminating the fuss of high-heeled designs, this type of less-is-more footwear keeps you grounded (get it?) while still delivering the fun styling opportunities of fisherman slip-ons and platform slides.

How to wear flat sandals

It’s easy to assume that because flat sandals have no heel (or a very tiny one), they’re a strictly minimalist choice. On the contrary, they are incredibly aesthetically versatile. Less hardware makes them more lightweight, meaning you can play with shapes and textures in your clothing choices.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LAUNCHMETRICS.COM/SPOTLIGHT

If your flat sandals are simple and black (like those pictured above), style with a playful pattern and foot-reaching fringe. Want your flats to make more of a statement? Try a pair with a long strap that can be wrapped up to reach your calves.

When in doubt, experiment with colour. Silver and gold continue to trend as outfit add-ons, so consider investing in a pair of flat sandals that have a sleek reflective hue. With the right shoe choice and a great pedicure, you’re set for a winning sunny season.
