What’s on our minds, you ask? Only the Rokh x H&M collaboration. Korean-born, Texas-raised fashion designer Rok Hwang has put his signature spin on H&M’s everyday items, dissecting, examining, reimagining and reconstructing basic garments and subverting expectations on what a “professional” wardrobe should look like.

“I always focus on making my collections as timeless as possible, and one way of doing that is with customizable details,” he explains in a press release. “I’ve seen people wearing panels from our signature multi-button trench coat upside down and inside out, in brilliantly unique ways I never imagined when I first came up with the design. To see my clothes being interpreted by people in their own way is one of my greatest pleasures, and I can’t wait to see how customers engage with this fun and dynamic collection for H&M.”

Here for a limited time only, the Rokh x H&M capsule features double-layer trench coats, detachable-hem dresses, corset tops, reworked trousers and a head-to-toe floral look (the top, skirt, gloves and tights are all in the same botanical print). Plus, there are tons of playful accessories, like a briefcase bag and an accordion file clutch.

How to Hack Picture-Perfect Skin and More Beauty Tricks We Learned on TikTok

0

Another round of TikTok beauty hacks, anyone? This month’s recap is full of influencer-approved makeup tricks, from rethinking your blush placement to getting a photo-ready glow using bronzer, to Glamzilla’s setting spray technique for lipstick  that doesn’t budge.

As for hair and nails, we’re breaking down how to make *any* set of press-on nails fit perfectly, plus one hair hack curly girls need to try for a more voluminous ponytail.

Snatch your face by “lifting” your blush with concealer

@roseandben

SAVE this for later! 🍎❣️ Super easy blush placement hack 🍎✨ #makeuptips #makeuphacks #viralmakeup

♬ original sound – Rose Siard

It probably feels like second nature at this point to smile and apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, as so many moms, makeup gurus and big sisters taught us to do at one point or another. But have we been doing it wrong all along? If it’s mega-snatched glam you’re hoping to achieve, then perhaps you have. Rose Siard is currently going TikTok-viral (racking up over one million views, to be precise) for her blush placement sculpting technique, and it’s not hard to see why. By slicing through her blush with a stroke of concealer, she presents instantly chiselled cheeks.

To get Siard’s look, begin by using the bottom of your nostril as a guideline, and apply a swipe of concealer (on top of already applied blush) from your nose to your ear. “Take a small brush, and we’re going to tap around the edges. Then, lightly tap the edges [again] with your foundation brush,” the creator says. When compared to the unfinished side in her TikTok post, her face is visibly lifted, and her blush still looks gorgeous. Oh, the power of product placement!

As seen in Siard’s post, Live Tinted’s Huestick All-Over Color Corrector in the shade “Aura” is a secret makeup weapon. From your eyes to your cheeks, this multi-stick can be applied wherever you need a little tone-balancing touch-up.

Make any set of press-on nails fit with hot water

To quote @nailevated on TikTok, size matters! The size of your press-on nails, that is. There’s nothing more disheartening than preparing to apply a fresh set of falsies only to find that they’re not a perfect fit.  While you can shop false nails in different sizes, sometimes nails that are naturally curved need a little…customization. Here’s where this seemingly odd, yet effective, hot water hack comes in.

Pour yourself a glass of boiling water. *Carefully* take the individual nail that doesn’t fit, and press it against the outside of the glass for about 10-15 seconds. The result? A softened, but still perfectly intact, nail that’s slightly more malleable and will now fit the exact shape of your natural nail with the help of a little nail glue. Just be sure you’ve got as close to your correct size as possible to begin with.

For a classic press-on manicure, shop Kiss’s Classy Ready-To-Wear nails in the “Dashing” style. Once you’ve size-matched each nail, these long-lasting tips can be further shaped by trimming and filing for a truly customized fit.

Hack photo-ready glowing skin with a shimmery bronzer

@rachleary

ME 🤝🏼 THE SHIMMERY BRONZER HILL ✨🤣🍊 wont stop until it gets the recognition it deserves i swear itll transform your make up routine! #fyp #foryou #makeup #makeuptrend #trending #shimmerybronzer

♬ Pretty girls here – Jaz

“I don’t know why more people don’t do this in their makeup routine” was the opening line that reeled me in and introduced me to this next clever trick. As I continued watching Rachel Leary’s video, I too found myself wondering why we’re not all dusting a glowy bronzer over our faces for a picture-perfect finish. As a long-time influencer, the proof is in her photos — this transformative tip gives you a gorgeous glow that looks radiant, but not greasy.

Mixing two shimmery bronzer shades, Leary goes in with a blush brush and applies the products to her cheeks and forehead. “I’m being so light on my hand right now, especially on the forehead,” she explains in the post. “I think this makes the biggest difference for the way that your makeup looks in pictures.” She then completes her glam by adding blush as usual, and the final look speaks for itself. Consider me influenced.

To get Leary’s exact look, the first shade you’ll need in your makeup kit is MAC’s “Global Glow” Mineralize Skinfinish Face Powder. When mixed with the “Gold Deposit” shade, you’ll be glowing in no time.

Try Glamzilla’s setting spray trick for lipstick that won’t move

@glamzilla

THIS HACK IS A GAMECHANGER!!!! @Patrick Starrr you are EVERYTHING for making this setting spray!!!!!!! #beautytok #makeup #hack

♬ original sound – GLAMZILLA

There are few things more devastating to a lipstick addict than finding a lippie you love doesn’t last long enough on the lips. Fortunately, Canadian influencer Glamzilla just put us on to a setting spray hack that’ll make all of your favourite lipsticks transfer-proof. With nearly one million views on the tutorial, it’s the lipstick hack everyone on the app is rushing to recreate — here’s how she does it.

Once you’ve applied your lipstick, start by blotting some of the product off with a tissue. Next, grab setting spray and spritz away on top of pursed lips. Allow the product a moment to dry, and give it the old tissue test to make sure it won’t budge. And if that weren’t enough, in the comments of her video she revealed that this lip hack works on lip liners, too!

One/Size’s On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray is the key to making this trick work. With its light application and non-sticky finish, you’ll want to set your entire face with this Glamzilla-approved spray while you’re at it.

Volumize a curly ponytail in seconds with hidden bobby pins

If you’ve ever tried to put curly hair into a ponytail, you know that most of your volume vanishes as soon as you slick your hair back. Where all that volume goes, I wish I knew, but with the aid of one trusty TikTok tutorial by @alysa.jordann, you can hack your way back to a fuller-looking pony. And all you’ll need is two hairpins.

First, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the back of your head as you typically would. Then, taking the top left and right pieces of hair, pin each piece above the ponytail as high or as low as you’d like on either side. And then you have it, a more fanned-out, ultra-poufed pony that looks naturally full-bodied.

Conair’s Pin & Match hair pins are designed to seamlessly blend into hair of all types to make hair styling easy. Plus, they come with a clear, compact case for easy on-the-go storage.

The Overconsumption Problem

0

Every evening, I perform a fusion ritual with my phone and disappear into a universe populated by tiny thumbnail images of garments I would like to own. Toggling between The RealReal, Ssense, Depop and Poshmark, I imagine what my life would be like if I owned that Rachel Comey jumpsuit or that Cecilie Bahnsen dress — where I’d wear it, who I’d flirt with in it. Occasionally, I am overtaken by a dark force and click “buy,” but more than anything, I scroll. Most of my waking hours are spent playing Purchase Tetris, arranging and rearranging my current obsessions into a structure that allows me to acquire each and every one. Meanwhile, a closetful of beautiful clothing hangs undisturbed in a room nearby.

As a fashion journalist who has been writing at the intersection of culture and sustainability for well over a decade (my undergraduate degree is in environmental studies), I am more than aware of the staggering issues the world faces when it comes to degradation of the natural environment caused by the overproduction of clothes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that textiles accounted for more than 17 million tonnes of the municipal waste thrown out in 2018 (a total of 297 million tonnes). That’s more than 547 kilograms a second — and it doesn’t even consider the egregious human-labour issues baked into the industry. Yet I still shop.

I abandoned fast fashion long ago, and most of the clothing I acquire is second-hand, yet it feels excruciating to accept that my insatiable appetite is actually part of the problem. Experts have long touted learning how to appreciate what you already have, purchasing only when you absolutely need to and trying to do so second-hand as the best ways to participate in sustainable fashion. Yet in spite of the plentiful nature of my closet, I still crave more. Over time, as I have negotiated my own impulses, I have begun to wonder “Is it possible to rid oneself entirely of the desire to consume?”

It feels excruciating to accept that my insatiable appetite is actually part of the problem.

I’m not alone in my concerns. The “say-do gap” — that is, when people purport to believe one thing yet behave differently — is well documented. According to a 2017 GlobeScan survey, 65 per cent of respondents want to support companies that have a moral purpose, yet less than 30 per cent actually do so. While many critics intone that individual actions taken to combat climate change are futile when 71 per cent of global emissions since 1988 have been produced by just 100 companies, we must acknowledge that these corporations are not typically in the business of creating goods for which there is no appetite. “It’s the consumers who actually burn and demand the fossil fuels that these companies provide,” Richard Heede told Vox in 2018.

And yet there are plenty of examples of people who seem perfectly happy not living a consumer-based lifestyle: Buddhists, Amish people, dads who have worn the same Patagonia fleece jacket for decades. The answer I’ve arrived at is “Yes, it is possible to train oneself to desire less — but not without great motivation and difficulty.”

According to Carolyn Mair, a behavioural psychologist and the author of The Psychology of Fashion, the best way to train yourself to not want to buy things is simply to distract yourself whenever the impulse arises. Try avoiding the “buy it now” button whenever the impulse pops up. “Pick up rubbish, volunteer for something, go to the gym, start running,” suggests Mair. “Make fashion less important in your life.”

Carey Morewedge, a professor of marketing at Boston University, notes that completely removing yourself from any stimuli that arouse the impulse to shop is “impossible to do, given advertising.” But there are some spaces you can control. If you notice that familiar tingle in response to Instagram ads or have fallen prey to #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt, block any accounts proffering goods you’re susceptible to being seduced by or disengage from the apps entirely.

By the time we reach adulthood, many of us have lost touch with our true selves and fill the void of what is missing with habits like material overconsumption.

However, if deleting your primary source of entertainment sounds absurd or impossible, the most effective long-term way to rid yourself of the desire to shop is to locate the roots of the impulse and disentangle them. Katherine White, a professor at the University of British Columbia who studies consumer behaviour, suggests a process called “laddering,” in which you continue to ask yourself why you want something until you have figured out the underlying reason. By repeatedly asking yourself “Why?” you can unearth what White calls “the shining carrot that will get you to change your behaviour.”

If you shop because you feel like there’s a part of you missing, you may be experiencing a condition that shamanistic cultures refer to as “soul loss,” says psychotherapist Eric Windhorst. According to Windhorst, whose practice is informed by ecopsychology, humans are born whole from a shamanistic perspective and then cut off parts of themselves in order to live in society. By the time we reach adulthood, many of us have lost touch with our true selves and fill the void of what is missing with habits like material overconsumption. It is only through extensive therapy and perhaps, as suggested by the woo-woo inclined, a “soul retrieval ceremony” that we can find our way back to who we are supposed to be.

I admit that I still find myself mindlessly scrolling through clothes online most nights. When I feel the itch to shop, I could try harder to curb the impulse by putting down my phone and reading a book or watching a movie instead, but I don’t. It turns out that looking at beautiful things just happens to be one of my main hobbies. But at least I have something to work on: finding total contentment with my place in the world. Just like the dads in their Patagonia fleece, I know that one more sweater or one more dress isn’t going to bring me closer to reaching that goal.

We’re Witnessing a Katy Perry Fashion Comeback

0

Katy Perry’s style evolution has entered the chat. The singer and American Idol judge, who for years looked like she stepped out of Candyland with her ice cream cone bras and candy cane leggings, has been slaying lately. Having upgraded her closet from cartoonish costumes to fashion forward looks from Schiaparelli, Vivienne Westwood and Coperni (including *thee* viral glass bag), Ms. Perry is no longer playing when it comes to style.

A post shared by KATY PERRY (@katyperry)

Many a Katy Perry Stan has pointed out on TikTok that Perry’s fashion renaissance has been a long time coming. And with the star gearing up to release new music with her forthcoming album KP 6, it’s not shocking that the singer is also entering a new style era.

Perry has always had a distinct aesthetic. After first entering the scene with her 2008 hit “I Kissed A Girl,” Perry became known for her retro ‘fits, donning vintage rompers, high-waisted pinup shorts and babydoll dresses in shades of sorbet. With her raven tresses and signature red lipstick, Perry was a kind of retro manic pixie dream girl, a cross between New Girl’s Zoey Deschanel and Lily Allen.

This early era of Katy Perry’s style also introduced fans to what would become Perry’s enduring quirkiness, and something that has persisted throughout her career. Take, for example, this sequined Jean-Charles de Castelbajac dress, emblazoned with President Barack Obama’s face, that she wore during the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.

As her star rose in the late 2000s to early 2010s, the singer favoured soft, feminine silhouettes on the red carpet, turning to designers like Marchesa and Dolce & Gabbana and favouring flowing fabrics like chiffon, tulle and silk. This aesthetic was in line with an emerging ingenue who was finding her style as her star rose.

In the summer of 2010, Perry released her third studio album, Teenage Dream, which was not only a defining moment for many millennials, but also for Perry’s style. We’re talking about Perry’s rainbow hair era which saw the signer cycle through electric blue and lilac wigs. Whether Perry was donning pastel clothing or wearing actual candy, she was, as UMusic notes, creating a  “technicolor dreamworld,” always with a slight retro twist.

And then, in 2017, that all changed. After an extended break, Perry returned with Witness and a divisive blonde pixie cut. This era of Perry’s style career saw the pop star take on a more contemporary and structured look, donning looks from designers Roberto Cavalli and Naeem Khan on the red carpet, with some to-be-expected quirk — like the bejewelled basketball corset she wore to perform at the 2017 VMAs.

In November 2020, Perry teamed up with Australian stylist Tatiana Waterford, and that’s when her more elevated style first started taking shape. In January 2021, Perry performed during the U.S. presidential inauguration celebrations wearing a sleek all-white caped look with an exposed corset from Thom Browne. It was classic, structured, patriotic (those blue and red buttons!) and pitch-perfect for the event. With subdued hair and makeup by artist Michale Anthony (who still works with Perry), the singer presented a strong figure and let her vocals — and the historic moment — shine.

A post shared by Tatiana Waterford (@tatianawaterford)

Since 2021, Waterford and Perry’s collaboration has only gotten better. While people may have some opinions on whether American Idol is still relevant, the fact is Perry has been using the show as a runway to flaunt her new high fashion wardrobe, one that’s characterized by sculptural silhouettes, luxurious fabrics and avant garde designers— while still maintaining a bit of fun.

This month, Perry stepped her sartorial savviness into overdrive while on the Idol circuit. On April 1, the singer shared photos of herself wearing a brown velvet Schiaparelli halter gown featuring a pair of gold lips at the neckline. Perry paired the artful gown with the brand’s signature gold earrings, in the shape of — what else? — an ear.

A post shared by KATY PERRY (@katyperry)

The same day, Perry posted photos of herself in (and then struggling to get out of) a crimson bouclé Bottega Veneta dress with a drop waistline and accentuated shoulders. Perry and Waterford paired the gown with some of Perry’s signature quirk, adding matching opera gloves featuring appliquéd flowers from the brand’s Spring 2023 collection.

And most recently, Perry took to the judges table in a Schiaparelli-inspired confection, donning a custom two-piece set from Kate Barton featuring a metal breastplate.

A post shared by Kate Barton (@katebarton)

Since taking her on as a client, Waterford has helped seamlessly transition Perry into this modern and more mature era,  maintaining many of the retro elements the “California Girls” singer has long favoured but iterated in elevated fabrics with expert construction. Perry has left behind her old interpretation of quirkiness, displayed through garish prints and outlandish accessories, in favour of a more grown-up kind of whimsy, communicated through the art of fashion houses like Schiaparelli. 2024 Katy Perry wears interesting looks in a way that allows her, not her over-the-top outfits, to take centre stage.

After almost two decades of often appearing like a caricature of herself, this fashion forward Katy Perry looks, dare we say, cool? Talk about a “Dark Horse.”

Bermuda Shorts Are the Anti-Trend Answer

0

These days, pants seem to be shrinking before our very eyes. From the growing popularity of short shorts to the shift towards bodysuits being worn as entire outfits, today’s trends have made regular-length bottoms rarer than ever. Looking for a reprieve against the leg-baring styles of the moment? Bermuda shorts are just the way to get it.

Perfectly dressed up with a linen shirt or made more casual with classic tank tops, billowy Bermudas are the best bottoms to have in your closet this summer.

What are Bermuda shorts?

More conservative than cheeky cutoffs but less lengthy than capris, The best Bermuda shorts have longer inseams that hit one to two inches above the knee. “They originated from the early 1900s when officers in Bermuda required a cooler option to full-length trousers while working in the warm climate,” explains Toronto-based stylist Jaclyn Patterson.

Though the general premise is the same, there is not one set Bermuda shorts length, and they can also range in fabric and cut.

How to wear Bermuda shorts now

“My favourite way to style Bermuda shorts this spring and summer is with a simple cotton tank, either an oversized blazer or white button down as a top layer depending on temperature, a timeless belt and sandal kitten heels. I would finish with my go-to everyday minimal jewellery,” says Patterson.

Of course, your exact styling decisions will depend on the occasion. For work, Patterson suggests trouser-style shorts with a white button down, made more polished with a belt and simple flats. For an evening outing, she says to try a kitten heel, chunky earrings and a statement shoulder bag. The beauty of Bermuda shorts is that, with their practical length and day-to-night wearing, these truly do it all.

“Dressing is meant to be fun and effortless,” adds Patterson. “Enjoy styling shorts in a way that makes you feel your best.”

Kim Kardashian’s Most Controversial Met Gala Looks

0

Kim Kardashian is very good at being famous. I know this. You know this. Anna Wintour definitely knows this. Love her or hate her, there’s no denying that the reality-star-turned-billionaire-businesswoman knows how to garner attention — and her talent for stirring up spectacle shines brightest at the Met Gala.

Ever since she first attended the esteemed event in 2013, the Skims founder has nary missed the opportunity to saunter up fashion’s favourite steps on the first Monday of May. And why would she? Kim Kardashian has become a fixture of the fussed-about ball, and the 2024 “Sleeping Beauties” theme — which celebrates rare, archival fashion — is even speculated to be a cheeky nod to her hotly debated Marilyn Monroe cosplay. (More on that later.)

Photography by Theo Wargo/WireImage

In preparation for this year’s shindig, below is a rundown of the most contentious looks Kim Kardashian has ever dared to don to the Met Gala. Sorted in chronological order, these are the ‘fits that most angered, confused and provoked the court of public opinion. What can I say? I love mess!

2013 Met Gala: Givenchy does florals for spring

Photography by Larry Busacca/Getty Images

Your grandmother’s couch could never. For her first go at the spiffy soirée, a pregnant Kim Kardashian was the plus-one of her now ex-husband Ye. Her flower-print Givenchy gown featured a thigh-high slit, gloved sleeves and matching open-toe shoes.

Everything was not coming up roses for this look, though, with it being promptly compared to matronly home decor and immortalized in the worst imaginable way — as memes. Most recently, it served as the inspiration for Kourtney Kardashian’s 2023 Halloween costume.

“I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it,” Kardashian later told Vogue. On the bright side, it served as a harbinger of viral Kim Kardashian Met Gala looks to come. And to that, I say, good for her!

2019 Met Gala: Mugler’s drenched dress

Photography by Getty images

While Karlie Kloss was looking camp right in the eye to prepare for the 2019 Met Gala, Kim Kardashian was squeezing into a gown of unnatural proportions. The skin-tight, soaked-looking ensemble, which was a result of Manfred Thierry Mugler coming out of retirement for the first time since 2003, immediately set off alarm bells on the internet.

Not only was the trompe l’oeil wet effect otherworldly, but conspiracies were hatched as to how, exactly, Kardashian’s waist could be so tiny. She later told WSJ that she had “never felt pain like that in my life,” and that the dress left her with physical indentations on her stomach and back. (Safe!) Little did the world know far more intense body manipulation was on the horizon…

2021 Met Gala: Balenciaga’s blackout

Photography by Getty Images

One thing about Kim Kardashian? She can’t seem to pass up the chance to wear Balenciaga. The star has become an unofficial mascot for the much-disputed brand (pre- and post-scandal), and her 2021 Met Gala look is the perfect example.

A year after Covid prevented stars from posing on the viral staircase, she came back with a new look that saw her covered her from head to toe. For the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” theme, Kardashian presented her recognizable silhouette and literally nothing else. Coming from arguably the most famous pop culture figure in the country, it was an undeniably all-American statement to make. A true patriot!

2022 Met Gala: The Marilyn Monroe moment

Photography by Getty Images

When it comes to bodily transformations, the star’s 2019 Mugler look was but an amuse-bouche for her jaw-dropping 2022 get-up. To honour the “Gilded Glamour” theme, she plucked the very dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.

The shimmery design, which hadn’t been worn in decades, further established her any-means-necessary costuming commitment. Not only did she dig deep into the archives for this dress, but she claimed she lost 16 pounds in three months to fit into it. “It was this or nothing,” she told Vogue.

Needless to say, the ensemble was so shocking that the fact that Pete Davidson was her date seemed completely normal.

2023 Met Gala: Schiaparelli’s sea-inspired set

Photography by Getty Images

Snatched shapewear met mermaidcore for this Kim Kardashian Met Gala look. Sporting custom Schiaparelli by Daniel Roseberry, the star modelled opulently draped pearls, satin waist cinching and a trailing white cloak.

The freshwater jewels were a nod to the late Karl Lagerfeld, who was the theme of the evening and whose affinity for pearls came through in his time as creative director at Chanel. Though it wasn’t as contentious as the dress she plucked from a museum, reviews were still mixed. But the critic who detested the look more than anyone? Her daughter North West, who famously opined that “the pearls look fake.”

There’s always next year, Kimmie.

Exposed Bra Straps Are More Than Just a Y2K Throwback

0

In a turn of events that has millennials shaking, it’s official: Exposed bra straps and layered tank tops are back. On April 13, pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo performed at Coachella, joining No Doubt for their first performance in almost 10 years. The Guts singer belted out the band’s ska punk classic “Bathwater” and paid homage to both lead singer Gwen Stefani and the band’s Y2K punk rock aesthetic while doing it, taking the stage in a white tank top and bright red bra.

And Rodrigo made more than just a nostalgic fashion statement with her bedazzled crimson bra straps.

A post shared by Olivia Rodrigo (@oliviarodrigo)

Whether intentional or not, Rodrigo’s fashion choice was a reclamation of women’s bodies against the still persisting politics around them and just what is “appropriate” to wear. If it feels like a bit of a stretch, it actually isn’t. Here’s why.

To be clear, Rodrigo is far from the first celeb to don exposed bra straps. While Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw may have been one of the first to do it in pop culture (and make it fashion), the trend was a staple for millennials in middle and high school. We layered our American Eagle and Bluenotes ribbed tanks to perfection, oft letting our La Senza Girl (or Victoria’s Secret if your mom was a cool mom) bra straps peek out, screaming: “I am a young woman!!”

A tank top with exposed straps was a sartorial rite of passage for many young folks. But the style also often met with judgement and stereotyping from those outside the tween and teen girl demographic.

For decades, the bodies of young women have been policed by inherently patriarchal institutions and a society that continues to sexualize women’s bodies without their consent. And for many of us, exposed bra straps or spaghetti strap tank tops at school was a way of stepping into our young womanhood that was often chastised for being “too revealing” or “inappropriate.” (Never mind the fact that bra straps are an essential clothing item, like socks, which no one clutches their pearls over if they show. But I digress.)

The notion that prominent bra straps are scandalous implies, of course, that showing one’s bra straps or “too much” skin is distracting to male students and inappropriate, and therefore the female body as a whole is inappropriate. It’s something that was an issue as recently as 2018 and is, frankly, a load of BS.

And while elder millennials may have long since graduated high school, women’s bodies (especially those of BIPOC women) continue to be sexualized and policed. Just look at the recent treatment of actress Sydney Sweeney. Since breaking out in 2019 as Cassie on HBO’s Euphoria, Sweeney has been a hot topic of conversation for both the size of her talent and… her chest. Eye roll.

Despite her acting skills, Sweeney has been consistently critiqued and over-sexualized for something that’s simply part of her anatomy and has no bearing on her ability to do her job. If she wears a low-cut top with thin straps, she’s a harlot; if she wears a turtleneck, she’s dowdy and attempting to be taken too seriously. It’s a lose-lose situation, and it’s tiring.

A post shared by SKIMS (@skims)

There have been other moments of pushback against this kind of policing of women’s bodies through fashion in recent years. In October 2023, Kim Kardashian’s brand Skims launched the now-viral Skims Nipple Bra, which features, you guessed it, two very perky nipples that create the illusion the wearer is braless. While some questioned the bras when they first launched, they’ve since gone on for some to become a symbol of reclaiming control and bodily autonomy from the male gaze.

And now, the 2024 return of exposed bra straps. In addition to Rodrigo, Kim Kardashian has taken to the exposed straps trend, most recently sporting layered tanks (*screams in millennial*) while in Paris for fashion week in March.

Brands like Reformation have also taken Rodrigo’s bra strap-exposing dressing to a new, somewhat retro level, releasing undergarment-inspired linen dresses, tops and bathing suits for spring. And gen Z TikTokers have been following suit, turning to the tank layering trend on social media (and falsely claiming they invented it — sorry pals, millennials were here first!). It’s gone mainstream, and it’s not that big of a deal.

And that’s really how it should be. By baring their bra straps, stars like Rodrigo, brands like Reformation and fashion girlies are helping de-stigmatize deep-rooted stereotypes people have about them, and by extension about women’s bodies. Not bad for a red bra, huh?
